Wait, you're following the 3000 foot rule by linking all the peaks including Huron together in one push. Are you saying 3000 foot rule also applies to the support team bringing you supplies, so they have to hump anything they bring you up at least 3000 feet from their car?

Or is it that you have to climb at least 3000 feet to the next summit from wherever you receive the supplies, and Clohesy Lake is low enough? Either way, that seems really, really odd. I'd think the rule only applies to the hiker making the effort, not supplies. Does that mean if some rando sitting on a summit offers you a candy bar, you have to say no?

I think the rules that Cave Dog established basically say you're on your own in that 3000' window. Ok to have hiking partners, but not pacers or navigators. Although I don't remember if the issue of supplies is addressed explicitly, by taking the "high road" Andrew, if successful in establishing a new FKT, would set a standard of no assistance that the next attempt would have to meet or exceed. Taking a candy bar (or sleeping bag) opens the door to other assistance and it could get messy from there.

Yes, Andrew is referring to the rule set by Cave dog on his 14er records which Andrew followed on his colorado 14er speed record as well--see thedogteam.com

2. Muling:
Once the 3,000 feet is started, no form of aiding is allowed except by those that are sharing in the M 4 attempt.

So Andrea meeting him on the top of Huron with support would be considered muling.
All support is only allowed 3000ft below a summit.
Andrea messaged me in a panic when she realized this. Glad they figured it out.

I think he likes this rule because it puts it all on the person trying for the record--no helping carrying his pack, not extra food/water, no aid in navigation. Makes it interesting and more challenging.

Related to the rules ... Shout out to nonstandard14er podcast where they recently hosted Andrew to talk about his 14er FKT, Nolans, Snowlans, and other various pursuits. He talks about the 3,000' rule and the story where CaveDog declined a banana at a summit because of the rule. In some ways, it seems a bit capricious, but you gotta set the bar somewhere.

Andrew, you are hella long-winded but at the same time fascinating/compelling when you talk about these mountain adventures. I've heard/read some of the stories you talked about before, but it was cool to hear your passion coming through on the podcast. Looking forward to listening to the other nonstandard14er episodes as well.

It’s true I was panicking ha, Laura knows me well, because I was going to be out of service before I could post our mistake and re plan.

The River crossing was a piece of cake, it was the road after that we couldn’t drive - because you know, big rocks. I swear that road has gotten much worse.

So Anyways, we hiked and resupplied Andrew at Clohesy Lake, and all is well. He is fed, packed with food, has warm clothes, fresh batteries and a charged phone etc etc. should get him through the night. He didn’t nap, and will be ready for sleep come morning. We are expecting him between 8-10 am.

He had a good day, nothing crazy to report. We are super thankful for the good weather window we got. He needed that.

That's a promising update, Andrea. I'll bet he was really happy to see you! Here's to some quality zzzzzz's soon too.

He just topped out on North Apostle at 6:25am just short of completing his third full day. Holy smokes, what a day! Here are the stats by hiking day since his start on 6/27 at 6:36am. I treated the short re-supply last night at Clohesy Lake as a trailhead (Andrea, glad you could make it there and be outside the 3000' window).

Again, just amazing. I have fifteen peaks planned for the entire summer, and Andrew has done 18 in three days.

Andrew, congrats on finishing that. I can't imagine starting across the ridge from Huron in the dark... and, I'm glad you got Ice in the light (that is even scarier to think about in the dark).

You're probably already on this but it looks like your Delorme battery is low...

What are the YDS ratings for the most technical centennials (Dallas, Teakettle, and Jagged I believe)? Are these normally solo'd by experienced climbers? Would getting belayed violate the 3000 foot rule? Does rappelling violate the rule?

Dallas is 5.3, Teakettle is easy 5th, and jagged is 5.2-3 as well. Wham, if he does it, is 5.4. all easily soloable by someone of Andrews ability. And no, rappelling would not violate his parameters
