Slight Issue With Checklists

Post by 14ercooper »

Hello!

I noticed a slight issue with the checklists page, specifically the little block of text where it lists how many of the peaks you've climbed for both 14ers and 13ers.
The checklist for 14ers only has 73 total summits (since NW Lindsey is now on the 13ers list), but the summary box still shows "X of 74", which is a bit weird since there's only 73 14ers now.

Thanks, and appreciate all the work you put into the site!

I would like to download/export my checklist data to CSV/Excel. Do I have to upgrade my "basic" lists to "advanced"? I don't want to mess it up/lose data somehow, is there a backup?

You just want a backup (.csv file) of your checklist?

You don't need to upgrade to "advanced." To make a backup to .CSV, go the the checklist update page and click the "Backup" link on the top right. For "Basic" checklists, it will include a column with your total number of climbs for that peak. For "Advanced" checklists, it will show each climb.

Note: On your checklist update page, you'll also see an "Export" link, which works a bit differently and exports the peaks with a .csv column indicating if the peak has been climbed or not. On that page, you can also export to .KML or .GPX files.

Sorry to pile on.

Is our 13er snowflake count supposed to include named+unnamed peaks? What about peaks that we had to repeat to get a snowflake?

I am unsure because my profile says 5 13er snowflakes but my checklist says "6 of 788."

Ah, maybe it's because one of my 13er snowflakes is unranked.

Since we are talking about checklists I was wondering why 13ers and 14ers are handled differently.

For example 14ers emphasize only officially named peaks while 13ers do not.

There are just 15 unofficially named 14ers which the site does not include in checklist reporting or on the peak list pages... making them difficult to find.

However the site does track the 304 13ers that don't have official names. 135 of those don't have names at all... official or unofficial.

Personally, all I care about is ranked vs. unranked.

I would guess that more and more people are interested in climbing all 73 14ers regardless if a person in a government office put an official name on the peak or not.

It would be cool 13ers and 14ers were treated consistently.

So I finally found the "Export" option, but the CSV file is very basic - Rank/Peak/Elevation/Range/Climbed? I want to download all my notes for each climb - because they have a date and other stuff. I want to figure out when I did which peak. What do I need to do that? Thanks.

I somewhat agree, but I'd argue for clear distinction between the 3 categories:

1) Ranked (incl. named and unofficially named) - What most people care about. This is the shortest complete list of 14ers and 13ers.

1b) Soft-Ranked - Unofficially named (by Roach) "West Eolus" is now alone in this category above 13k. Not sure it warrants special treatment since the next survey will prove that it is ranked (I want to say it's 3mm shy of ranked by 0.5 foot rounding?).

2) Named/Unranked (not ranked, but officially named by the USGS) - These peaks have inherent historical significance, and the list is largely stable over time. Including ranked peaks, this makes the 58 14ers and however many 13ers now (I haven't counted since LiDAR). This list includes Gray Needle, Little Finger, The Index. It does not include "Sunlight Spire", "Noname Needle", "West Eolus".

3) Unofficially Named (not ranked or officially named) - These are the bonus peaks which vary from historically significant ("Sunlight Spire", named in the Lavender era) to utterly insignificant ("Yahoo Mountain", named in modern times). The list is unstable and will grow ad infinitum. For many years a fixed number of these were present on this site, but recently an arbitrary (appearing) handful were added. There are many more on LoJ. Including Ranked and Named this comprises the latest list of 73 14ers and infinite 13ers.

Yup, as I mentioned, use the "Backup" option, instead of "Export." That should give you all your details, including notes.
Both links are in the same spot, on the checklist update page.

I'm a bit tied up during hunting season now, so I can't get too far into the discussion of why I've set 14ers vs. 13ers a bit different but I'll try to do so in the coming weeks.

One thing I will mention now, regarding the unofficially named 14er sub-summits:
"There are just 15 unofficially named 14ers which the site does not include in checklist reporting or on the peak list pages... making them difficult to find."
You should be able to check them on the "Update Checklist" and they do show up in the 14er Checklist (View) if you set the selection criteria to include unnamed peaks. But, no, they don't show up on the 14ers main page.
