Via Ferrata “Nuvolau” - Alta Via 1
We’re off to hike the Alta Via 1 later this summer and I noticed that there’s a via ferrata below Nuvolau. I’m curious if anyone’s done this and if I truly need to lug gear 75 miles with us just for this one section? If we do, then we’ll just take the alternate route from Averau. My husband and I do some sport climbing and don’t mind some exposure, but we’ll also have packs a bit bigger than our normal 14er setup. Thanks!

Re: Via Ferrata “Nuvolau” - Alta Via 1
FWIW here's a photo of Rif Nuvolau taken from Ra Gusela, a 3rd-class peak about a half-mile to the S. The red circle is the upper section of the via ferrata leading up to Nuvolau. It's exposed but it's just a ladder. From your description I think you'd be fine without gear. There's another section of via ferrata lower down (out of sight to the R). I didn't go that way but apparently it's no more difficult then the upper section. If you're planning to go up that way but change your mind when you get to the base of the lower section you can always turn around and take the easier way via Rif Averau.
