Mount Jasper - Snow Lion

Post by Gibson135 »

Has anyone been up there recently? I may be headed there very early tomorrow morning and just curious if anyone has anything to report.

Thanks!

It was a good day. I started out from the car at about 5am. Used crampons on the ascent past tree line, using the tips to kick in some steps on a few steeper spots. The ice ax was very useful going up, but I plan on getting a hybrid for steeper climbs. It was still doable with a straight one most of the way. The snow was solid most of the way up, but got a little softer near the top with the sun being out. It really didn't look like skiing down that route would have been too fun. By the time we came around to Gatorade, it was starting to warm up. It was a quick glissade down from there.

There was some postholing after that, but never consistent enough to get the snowshoes out.

I was about to ask why you thought it wouldn't be very fun to ski!  I'll have to try again next year it looks like.

Still looks like a great climb, though, thanks for sharing.

Yeah, I though it was definitely a good one even without skiing. Gatorade coming back seemed skiable though. Its just not very long
