Pin Point

Post by Ssgustafson »

Interested if anyone has sorted out where Pin Point actually is. There are multiple locations in multiple sources that point to substantially different locations along the ridgeline... Is there a definitive source ?

I think LoJ ends up being the most agreed upon/reliable with little nitpicky stuff like this (pin point is now an unofficial 14er according to that site?) but your best bet is probably to send the direct variation of the traverse

Its interesting as Peakbagger has it in the Gendarme area that is generally circumnavigated.... I actually think I hit the LoJ point before when I did the traverse as my GPS track overlaps Bob Burd's (https://www.snwburd.com/bob/trip_report ... n01_1.html), and he references the point in his narrative.... I just wasnt tracking it as a thing then, so I cant say for certain that I got it or not. I just dont want to go back there to make extra sure only to hear later that the PB location is the right one....

Ben Loftin and John Kirk did a LiDAR analysis of Pin Point last year, so I would trust their coordinates.

Did LoJ update the coordinates of “Pin Point”?

Last October I recorded the LoJ coordinates at
37.83910, -108.00200

Now it’s further east at
37.83923, -107.99963
I should be on a mountain

Yep. Now I technically haven’t done it. The pinnacle that used to be marked as the correct one is cool though. Much more exposed than El D summit

Some previous discussion on Pin Point here.

Yes, LoJ changed the location of Pin Point. It used to be at the first "bump" east of El Diente; ie, where PeakBagger still shows it (and the old coords mentioned by CheapCigarMan). I think LoJ has it at the correct location now (see the thread above - that's the point that makes sense to be called "Pin Point"). I suspect that a number of folks that logged the summit on LoJ and PeakBagger (including Bob Burd) went to the old coords (since that's what those sites said was the summit).

Most folks doing the traverse aren't going to naturally go over Pin Point. The typical traverse route goes below it. I'd say approaching Pin Point from the west (coming from El Diente) is certainly 5th class. Probably no harder than 3rd class (don't recall exactly) approaching from the east (from the Mt Wilson side).

Speaking of "little nitpicky stuff," "Pin Point" is now listed as an unofficial 14er on this site as well - part of the list of the 74 14ers that you see when displaying the "unnamed" 14ers as well (adds 16 more to the typical 58).

A ridge proper traverse to clean up what I missed on the first pass is on my to-do list...

Thanks for the discussion, everyone. Like daway8, I think I need to redo the traverse!
