Re: 2023 Goals

My goals are simple:

1. Climb more peaks than in 2022;
2. Climb Peak Ten (13,420) to (re)complete the tricentennials;
3. Climb Red Mtn. to complete a second tour of duty on the centennials; and
4. Backpack for five days at Isle Royale National Park.

Hmmmm. Goals. Well I usually don't do formal goals any more, don't want to feel any pressure or be disappointed. But since a lot of others here are giving it a shot, I guess then why not?

1. Scorpion Trail 50k (Finished - Jan. 7th)
2. 50k at end of Feb or early March (3 to choose from, haven't decided)
3. DT Stone Anvil 50k (April)
4. Hiking and photography - Mallorca (March)
5. At least 1 trip (hopefully 2) to CO for as many 14ers as I can accomplish (3 to 5?)
5a. Sub-goal: 14er in the Sagres or San Juans
6. Devil on the Divide 50k (Sept.)
7. That's as far as I can look ahead right now :-k

Scott P wrote: Fri Feb 03, 2023 9:26 am I have to admit that I really enjoy reading other people's wish lists, especially when they list specific peaks or places.

One big reason is because it shows mutual interest and finding and compatible partners is always fun, so if you see a peak or place on someone else's list that you are interested in, you can often contact that person and see if they want to team up. That's even true of generic goals too.

Another big reason is because it gives me and others an idea of peaks that we either didn't think of or even didn't know about. Sometimes when someone mentions a peak I either look it up if I haven't heard of it or put it on my list for the year if it sounds cool and I simply didn't think of it. I'm sure I'm not alone.

It is also inspiring to hear of some goals for climbs that I would never do, but that I can wish those who do the best of luck.

While some might have small goals and some might have big ones. Since they're your own goals and others have different interest, it really doesn't matter and no one should be embarrassed to post their goals if they feel that they are too small or too modest.

It is also pretty nice to hear about how people are doing on their goals too since we all have a common interest and all of us (well as far as I know) want others to succeed in their goals too. Which brings up another point. Certainly someone else did something cool in January? Tell us about it. :-D
I sat on my couch in January, but today I did 4100+ up Mt Olympus in the Wasatch. Kicked my butt. But it’s a start to what I hope is a big year!

I have a 100k in Texas on February 4th that has a very generous cutoff, so I'd really like to finish that after going 0 for 3 on races 100k+ so far. After that event, there should be more clarity on future running plans at least.

I have some custom lists on LoJ that I'd like to make progress on. Also, I've chatted with people over the past few years about various peaks, would like to follow through with those plans.
It wasn't pretty but got the 100k done, so that was the big ticket event of the year.

Scott P had a good point about getting specific on peaks, here's some that I've had in mind for a long time or have discussed with people, obviously won't get to all of these
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finish remaining 4 Front Range 12ers - McReynolds, Sentinel, Sheep (on the Pikes massif), pt12119. Would be really nice to finally close this out!
Am at 152/166 of Named/Ranked peaks in RMNP. At least put a dent in this list - Notchtop via Spiral Route, Wescott, Acoma, The Cleaver, The Gable are the ones most on my radar.
Lone Eagle Peak - Solo Flight route from the Front Range (the east side of the Divide)
A whole slew of 13ers in the Virginia group near Winfield. Maybe camp out there and also tag West Apostle on another day.
Emerald Peak/Iowa
Herard/Medano/3 12er loop
South River Peak
Mt Gunnison
Sleepy Cat Peak
Castle Peak - prominent 11er out in Eagle County
Anything I haven't done in Eagles Nest Wilderness, Zirkels. Eagles Nest, Mt Solitude, The Spider & Fly, "Anvil Horn", Big Agnes & Little Agnes are some of the standouts there.
Black Tooth Mtn/Mt Woolsey in the Bighorns (WY)
Wind River Peak (WY)
Kings Peak and neighbors (UT)
Laramie Peak (WY) - summit block was wet last time I went up
Grand Teton (WY) - probably just a pipe dream but would love to make this happen someday.
Treasure Mtn/Treasury
Fools Peak
Rio Grande Pyramid
Little Bear - West Ridge route. Have a work friend who wants to do LB for his list.

Other than that, just run slower while training so I can run more miles. Walk faster so I can improve my trail race times. Be more regular about lifting weights.
Take advantage of my Ascent 2 week pass once I get back to CO, 2/20-3/4 or so, climb every day or nearly so. Go bouldering more.

Same goal as 2022: Beat Cancer!

Oh, and I would like to get 30 ski days, 1000 mtb miles, and at least one peak >13k (extending a 43 of 44 year streak).

I really need to get this one sometime if you want to go. All the advanced camping reservations are already gone for August though. Dang.

It sounds like I'm going to be working in Granby March through the rest of the year. That's not a bad thing, but means that much of my goals list for 2023 is pretty obsolete.

This also means I might not have any partners for technical stuff. Dang. I need to get ready for a Patagonia trip later this year, but this might throw a monkey wrench into my planned training. Dang. Maybe I can find some partners around Granby for some moderate technical stuff?

Re: 2023 Goals

Post by Scott P »

February has come and is almost gone. Ten more months to go in 2023. I hope that you are all doing well with your goals.

It was a good month for me and I hiked, climbed, or canyoneered on all 28 days. The only real drawbacks were that I didn't get any rock towers and that most of my summits were repeats. I did however get many things done that have been on my list for a long time. Some of those are winter ascents of Manns Peak and Burro Ridge in the La Sal Mountains, a technical descent of Cherry Canyon in Arizona, rock climbing on Prophecy Wall in Utah, and a backpacking trip to Lower Grand Gulch also in Utah.

Generic Goals for 2023

Total Hiking, Climbing, and Canyoneering Days = 320-Currently at 57. I am ahead of schedule.
Total Days Hiking, Climbing, Canyoneering, and Biking Days = 350-Currently at 57. I am ahead of schedule.
Summits Climbed = 150-Currently at 32. I am ahead of schedule.
New Summits Climbed = 60-Currently at 8. I am behind schedule.
States to Climb Summits in = 6-Currently at 4. I am ahead of schedule.
Countries to Climb Summits in = 3-Currently at 2. I am scheduled for Chile/Argentina November and December.
Rock Towers/Technical Buttes = 10-Currently at 0. We attempted 1, but it was too icy to climb.
Technical Rock or Ice Routes = 30-Currently at 9. I am ahead of schedule.
Gym Climbing Days = 30-Currently at 1, but I'm not in a big hurry for this one.
Technical Canyons = 30-Currently at 6. I am ahead of schedule.
Biking Days = 30-Currently at 0, but I'm not in a big hurry for this one.
Lose Weight in lbs. = 20 (currently at 268)-Currently at 9 lbs. lost.

Plus this: Try not to get too riled up on people not knowing that calendar winter isn't a good definition of winter (even though it's the one used for official winter ascents) and people improperly identifying the Gore Range as well as people calling this extremely popular range "secret". -Doing OK so far.

I'm going to call the below a Wish List, rather than a Goal. The reason is my Goal is to finish 50% of the below. It is extremely unlikely that I will finish all this, but my goal is 50%. Of course more will be added as the year goes on. As always, partners are welcome. (Gaps will be left every 50 to make it easier to reference while I'm updating).

As mentioned on a previous post, I am now working in Granby until Thanksgiving so several peaks in that area were added and I'm not going to make it to as many places closer to Grand Junction as I originally planned.
