Re: 2023 Goals

What the heck, I'll try posting a few this year and see if it helps push me to actually attain them.

325mi hiking
100k vert hiking
2 winter snowflake hikes (13ers or 14ers)
Class 3 explorations - Kit Carson/Longs are my only real class 3 ascents, but I loved both (ignoring Challenger Point to get to KC...)
More backpacking - 4 nights minimum, 6+ desired
10 new ranked 13ers

More specific goals:
- Hiking/photography trip to Moab (Canyonlands/Arches). Haven't been since 2018 due to a variety of reasons, needs to happen this year!
- Chicago Basin trip (3+ 14ers & Jupiter)
- Wetterhorn
- Lindsay NW Ridge (if access reopens...)
- Attend Fall/Winter Gatherings

2023 Goals-

Post less than 10 times on this forum (oh crap this is #2 already).
Post one final trip report.
Climb the mountain so you can see the world, not so the world can see you.

Finish Centennials with jagged peak. Looking for partners for this! Complete Thru hike of CDT in Colorado north bound in late August September! To avoid thunder storms! And looking to stay healthy this year! Mark.

(1) Be grateful for what I can still do in the mountains at almost 63 years old, and at peace with what I can't do.

(2) At the same time, work on re-gaining some lost fitness to at least somewhat push back against the sands of time.

(3) Several new peaks - mostly 13ers. I have a bunch in mind but will remain flexible as to which ones. In terms of 14ers, mainly I want to finish up the Sawatch (Holy Cross, Oxford, Antero and Tabeguache).

(4) Fun with friends in the mountains - okay, this should be higher - part of the reason for #2 above is so that I can continue to hang with my mostly younger / more athletic friends without slowing them down too much.

(5) Complete another Ultra after missing cutoffs in the last 3 I ran. Looking at the Never Summer 60K. Bonus is that the best part of the course is front loaded, so I can still have a great day in the mountains even if I don't finish.

(6) Finally do the Weston pass to Mosquito pass traverse, which has been on my list for 3 years now. Maybe the most efficient way to tag ten 13ers (roughly, depending upon how you count them) and a 14er in one day.

(7) Volunteer again at Hard Rock & live vicariously through the crazy people who run the race. Also volunteer again at the Never Summer 100K, the day after I run the 60K.

(8) Finally get my first snowflake. Attempted it January 2, but turned around short on Bierstadt because of a late start.

(9) 2,000 miles / 400,000 feet of vert.

Modest by the standards of most people on this site, but if I manage most of those I'll consider it a successful year.

I feel like my aspirations are low compared to what I have read here. I'd like to make it to next year in healthy condition, ski some fun spring turns high up in a few months.

Re: 2023 Goals

Post by Scott P »

January has come and will be gone in a few hours. Hopefully everyone is making good progress with their goals. It was a pretty good month for me. I was able to get out on 29 days and only missed two due to being on planes or at airports.

Some Highs for January:

I am ahead of schedule on most all my generic goals. I got to do some nice hikes in the Philippines and visited a lot of caves and waterfalls there. I got to do two technical canyons in Nevada that have been on my list for a long time. I got to climb two peaks in Nevada that have been on my list for a long time. I got to do five technical rock climbs, four that were new to me and that I have been wanting to do for a long time. I met some new climbing partners. I lost several pounds this month.

Some Lows for January:

Although I completed 17 peak ascents in January, only four were non-repeats. I'll have to get more non-repeats as the year goes on. Not completing the Sneffels Traverse was a huge blow for me and we didn't even get close to climbing Hayden Peak. It was just too arduous with only two of us to break trail. Having Mayon Volcano and Bulusan (Philippines) closed on my arrival was a disappointment. I tried an alternate climb, Masaraga, but was unsuccessful on that too due to torrential rains and getting covered with leaches. Tezcatlipoca was too icy to make the summit on our attempt.

Generic Goals for 2023

Total Hiking, Climbing, and Canyoneering Days = 320-Currently at 29. I am ahead of schedule.
Total Days Hiking, Climbing, Canyoneering, and Biking Days = 350-Currently at 29. I am ahead of schedule.
Summits Climbed = 150-Currently at 17. I am ahead of schedule.
New Summits Climbed = 60-Currently at 4. I am behind schedule.
States to Climb Summits in = 6-Currently at 3. I am ahead of schedule.
Countries to Climb Summits in = 3-Currently at 2. I am scheduled for Chile/Argentina November and December.
Rock Towers/Technical Buttes = 10-Currently at 0. We attempted 1, but it was too icy to climb.
Technical Rock or Ice Routes = 30-Currently at 5. I am ahead of schedule.
Gym Climbing Days = 30-Currently at 0, but I'm not in a big hurry for this one.
Technical Canyons = 30-Currently at 3. I am ahead of schedule.
Biking Days = 30-Currently at 0, but I'm not in a big hurry for this one.
Lose Weight in lbs. = 20 (currently at 268)-Currently at 9 lbs. lost, but I weighed myself before I left for the Philippines so some is from the last part of last year.

Plus this: Try not to get too riled up on people not knowing that calendar winter isn't a good definition of winter (even though it's the one used for official winter ascents) and people improperly identifying the Gore Range as well as people calling this extremely popular range "secret". -Doing OK so far.

I'm going to call the below a Wish List, rather than a Goal. The reason is my Goal is to finish 50% of the below. It is extremely unlikely that I will finish all this, but my goal is 50%. Of course more will be added as the year goes on. As always, partners are welcome. (Gaps will be left every 50 to make it easier to reference while I'm updating).

Re: 2023 Goals

Post by Scott P »

I have to admit that I really enjoy reading other people's wish lists, especially when they list specific peaks or places.

One big reason is because it shows mutual interest and finding and compatible partners is always fun, so if you see a peak or place on someone else's list that you are interested in, you can often contact that person and see if they want to team up. That's even true of generic goals too.

Another big reason is because it gives me and others an idea of peaks that we either didn't think of or even didn't know about. Sometimes when someone mentions a peak I either look it up if I haven't heard of it or put it on my list for the year if it sounds cool and I simply didn't think of it. I'm sure I'm not alone.

It is also inspiring to hear of some goals for climbs that I would never do, but that I can wish those who do the best of luck.

While some might have small goals and some might have big ones. Since they're your own goals and others have different interest, it really doesn't matter and no one should be embarrassed to post their goals if they feel that they are too small or too modest.

It is also pretty nice to hear about how people are doing on their goals too since we all have a common interest and all of us (well as far as I know) want others to succeed in their goals too. Which brings up another point. Certainly someone else did something cool in January? Tell us about it. :-D
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.
