Which Sawatch summits with lab
Below is a list of the remaining 14ers in the Sawatch Range that I'd like to summit this year. Question is which 2 or 3 would you take your pup? Mine is a 7 yr old lab. He has accompanied me on 16 summits with no issues. I will say I'm glad I did not take him on Mt. Princeton or Mt Yale. I only include Yale due to that final push at the top. Thanks for the feedback.

I’ve had luck with all, but will say Tabeguache (West Ridge) was a little more than anticipated. With 16 under their belt, as long as they’re not a couch dog you’ll be fine.

I'd vote for Antero; especially since if anything is wrong with your dog, you're sure to be able to get a ride back down from any of the 4x4s there.
Re: Which Sawatch summits with lab
I saw your edit.. we did Yale in snow and I don’t think the dog had fun on that final ridge either. We did Princeton at night, and he actually tore a ruffwear boot, I understand both points. I’ll say for ‘Tero that LBC is more paw-friendly than the standard. NY’er has a solid point as well… I’d do them in this order
1. La Plata standard (alternate route has some rough ridge sections)
2. Holy Cross (we’ve done both but would stick to standard)
3. Massive SW Ridge (the rock crux on trail near treeline is harder than ridge)
4. Antero via LBC
5. You’ll have a good idea if shavano/tab is doable after these
Just my opinion and I’m merely an average hiker. Most of all have fun!!

the only one my dog hasn't done is Antero, and we are hoping to check that off this year. they are all dog-friendly, in my opinion.

Years and years ago, I had two Norwegian Elkhounds that went with me on every hike I did. They did all the Sawatch and all the front range save Pikes and Longs. Only problem I had was one cut paw pad on the west ridge of Tabeguache coming back down but as I always carried doggie snow booties, he made it the rest of the way with no problem with one of them on the injured paw.
As an aside, I think it's prudent to take those booties winter and summer they certainly helped me that day. It would have been tough to carry him down.

Appreciate the feedback. Which ones we do or not will likely depend on my finding a boarder for him in the BV area.
Yes, his ruffwear booties are paw savers no doubt. I also pack the fido harness but hope to never need to carry an 80 lb lab on my back while descending.

We have one as well and I hope to never use it. Maya was not amused to have to test it out though.stephakett wrote: ↑Tue Apr 19, 2022 9:15 ambeen carrying one of these for a few years- never had to use and i hope i never will, but i won't leave the house without it! https://fidoprotection.com/

Cool. Jon! Had I not had the bootie (the kind that just fit over a paw), I would have called you to come and be my Sherpa!
And yeah - Maya doesn't look too pleased at all - perhaps thinking "Please don't fall backwards"
