Bicentennial & Centennial

Post by RickSelah »

My business partner and 2 of our employees were friends and went to school with Ben Brownlee who died over the weekend in the basin near Redcloud. His last social post outlining his trip states: "Knock out 3 bicentennials in 5 miles above the pass that evening. Camp at the redcloud sunshine trailhead below the pass. Saturday climb the unnamed centennials, 2 bi’s and 2 regular 13ers."

I'm a moderately experienced mountain hiker with 27 14ers logged, but am unaware of the terms Bicentennials and Centennials. Guessing its references to sub-13k summits. Anyone care to provide enlightenment?

Centennials refer to the highest 100 ranked peaks in the state, and bicentennials refer to the highest 200 ranked peaks.

Centennials are the top 100 ranked peaks in the state and the Bicentennials are top 200.

The list at that link is incomplete. There’s a five-way tie for no. 198, which means 202 bicentennials, not 200.
