Changing Toe Bails on Crampons

Post by Double Oh Seven »

Ok, does anyone know a trick to this. I have the petzl vasak crampons that come with two toe bails. A flexible strap type fit and one that can fit into a toe welt. I am trying to switch the toe bails. I have tried pulling with rope and webbing no luck. I really dont want to pull with pliers because i am worried about damaging the metal. Trying to do this without stabbing myself is proving tougher than i thought any ideas?

I have the petzl Lynx, which has the same bails. I just ended up putting the bails in a bench vice and pulling on the crampon body. Another option would be to tie some cord or webbing around the bail and loop that around your foot wile pulling on the crampon body (just don't put your eye out).

Thanks. I got them switched. I ended up tying a rope around the bail. Holding the crampon down wearing the thickest gloves i could find and pulling like hell.
