CO 5 Mount Evans is now closed for the season from Echo Lake to the summit. The road is scheduled to reopen 5-27-13 weather permitting.

Darn. I can't imagine that much snow fell that won't melt off fairly quickly. If the coming winter is like last winter, the road will be "open" (that is, snow free) most of the winter.

Also heard from RMNP: Trail Ridge temporarily closed between Milner Pass and Rainbow Curve.

Thank you for this post. I had been planning the east ridge approach for B/S/E for a while now. I would have driven across the state only to gain a large headache at the added 22 miles this route would now require. I know B/S/E can be done from the west.... but that route doesn't have the right "feel" for me. Thanks again!

I have a friend flying in from FL tomorrow that wanted to drive up to Summit Lake to start acclimatizing. I told him a week or so ago that they closed the road from Summit Lake to the summit and now this will put a damper on his plans. I've never tried that road when it was stated it was "closed" so do not know what they mean by that. Is there a gate fully closing off access from the fee area that you cannot get around? If not blocking the entire way, I was going to suggest to him he can try his luck and drive the road (ONLY if in good condition) as far as he can (hopefully all the way to the Summit Lake closure).

It means the road is gated at Echo Lake.

Guess that rules out his plans. I will let him know. Perhaps I will steer him to Loveland Pass since it is so high where he can park and go for a little "stroll".

Thanks!

Or take the train to the top of Pikes...

Ya...Pikes actually came up, but the drive all the way down there didn't sound too good for him.

Echo Lake at 10K feet is perfectly good place to acclimatize too from Florida.
There is a two mile trail going around it for hiking or jogging.
The trees should be rather stunning now.

Will it reopen to Summit Lake at all throughout October? I thought I remember someone saying that seasonal access to Summit Lake doesn't end until around the end of October.. maybe I misunderstood! I'm bummed.. wanted to go climb Mt Evans from Summit Lake before the season was over..

According to MtEvans.com, the road closes "October 1, 2012, unless closed earlier due to weather." My guess is that it's closed until spring.
