This was the scene at sunrise this morning (9/24) at Maroon Lake! The sky was overcast, so there was no "real" sunrise to photograph. I dared to show up on this hallowed photo space without a tripod and was asked by a gentleman who arrived after me, "Are you just going to stand there with your camera?" And then, "Could you move, please?" It poured rain for 3 hours, sending all the photographers home disappointed. After taking a hike through the rain and mud past Crater Lake, we returned just after noon and were rewarded for our persistence with fabulous views and FRESH SNOW on the Bells.

Great shot DrGO. My climbing partner was just telling this weekend the bells would look more awesome with the snow and colors! The bells look all the more deadly!

Any updates from the Tetons area in regards to smoke and colors there?

Just don't seem to have the intense colors this year.

Where are you looking? I'd say on the contrary - they're pretty [beautifully] intense this year.

Last week in the Maroon Bells - castle creek area, I felt though the colors were good, they were more patchy than last year (the only year I can personally compare against). There were grooves of aspen with intense color but there were also many patches that were past their prime and bare. Is this very common? In comparison, I found the colors were more uniform and widespread last year.

I agree, I think this year's colors are great! We spent the weekend camping/hiking off of Kebler Pass and I thought the Fall show was fantastic, with intense yellow and gold colors along with oranges and even some reds. :-D

the colors this year are very vibrant with more oranges/reds because of the drought we've had. I remember last year the colors were on the dull side up on kebler pass.

Get out and enjoy it while they're peak, the leaves won't be on the trees for much longer!

Near Buffalo Pass, east of Steamboat. I definitely saw more reds this year!

That's a great photo... especially for someone who didn't bring the requisite tripod and pretentiousness of which you spoke!

I'm still trying to decide if I should cancel my trip to the San Juans this weekend (Sept. 29). I keep seeing pictures closer to the civilization areas (Denver and Colorado Springs). Anymore pictures from you guys from the Ridgway/Telluride areas? I hear it is raining today. Which couldn't be good for the leaves. It is a lot of money to fly and stay up there for 8 days. Plus I'm renting a D800 camera. So let's see some more pictures today of the San Juans please.
