I also hiked up Elbert on 7/3. I was surprised at how steep it was the first
mile like you. I left about 6:30 a.m. and ended up turning back when the thunder storm hit about 10:30 or so. I got to about 12700 or so. I'll try it again next year, not being from Colorado I have to schedule things.
What a nice thing to do - leaving jumper cables for the guy with the lights on! I didn't neven notice it - was that at the parking at the trailhead,? I parked and started from not the first lot, but the second bigger place to park w/o getting the 4 wd hung up. It has running boards and we were afraid it would get hung.
