EPIC (hehe) 1980 Alaskan Expedition

Postby Presto » Tue Nov 17, 2009 2:08 pm

9 climbers, 1 base camp cook, 3000 pounds of gear, 80 days, an ascent of Mt. Huntington ... this is a fascinating trip report. Dropped off in the middle of nowhere by a train, traveling cross country ... stunning photos (give them some time to download ... I had to click on show picture for a couple of them at the end). Enjoy! :D

As if none of us have ever come back with a cool, quasi-epic story instead of being victim to tragic rockfall, a fatal stumble, a heart attack, an embolism, a lightning strike, a bear attack, collapsing cornice, some psycho with an axe, a falling tree, carbon monoxide, even falling asleep at the wheel getting to a mountain. If you can't accept the fact that sometimes "s**t happens", then you live with the illusion that your epic genius and profound wilderness intelligence has put you in total and complete control of yourself, your partners, and the mountain. How mystified you'll be when "s**t happens" to you! - FM

That was pretty cool. We as mountaineers have it so much easier these days.

I thought the picture of the avalanche taken from above with the camp circled to give an idea for scale was the coolest! Alaska is the only other place I would consider living!

Cool! I think that would qualify as "Epic"
