Unleashed dogs in wilderness
Dog owners, please remember that when you are in one of the Wilderness areas that your dogs must be on leash at all time. This past Saturday August 22nd while climbing Yale (Collegiate Peaks Wilderness Area) I saw a young couple with four (4) dogs, none of which were on leash.

Re: UNLEASHED DOGS IN WILDERNESS
I share your sentiments, and would like dogs on leash where the rules state that that's how it works - you are correct in asserting that dogs must be on leash in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness.
But, leashes are not necessary at all Wilderness Areas - here's a bit more information on that:

Sometimes you have to double-check the info sign at the TH. There's a good book on popular hikes and dogs:

Most but not all. I am a volunteer in White River National Forest and can say that Holy Cross Wilderness only requires voice control for example. Collegiate Peaks does require a leash, however.

I asked Maya for her opinion of this thread. This is all I got.
On top of Holy Cross, so yes, she was legally off leash

If you check the "Pets on Peaks" sub-forum, you'll find this topic has been discussed ad nauseam. I'll move this topic there...coloradobob wrote:Dog owners, please remember that when you are in one of the Wilderness areas that your dogs must be on leash at all time. If you don't like dogs, don't go outdoors!
people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel...

Re: Unleashed dogs in wilderness
As someone that has done some volunteer hours on peaks for CFI and talked with owners, the owners always think their dog is different and their pet shouldn't have to be on a leash.coloradobob wrote:Dog owners, please remember that when you are in one of the Wilderness areas that your dogs must be on leash at all time. Make wilderness less accessible.
