Right around noon, I heard some of the loudest thunder claps of my life and saw several bolts of lightning one after the other. My house shook several times and there was hail. And those power lines along his Sherman approach... It could be extremely intimidating to a lesser mountaineer! Hope Andrew and the crew avoided the worst of it!!

I realize its just a road with little elevation gain, but the tracker is showing his speed at 3 - 4 mph. He must be able to taste it.

His family includes 2 of the youngest 14ers finishers ever. I believe Axel was 6 when he finished them all.

This will be the last update for a while. I'm in Alma waiting to go up to Kite Lake and, hopefully, hike the Decalibron with Andrew this evening. I'll be back online tomorrow sometime and will update the spreadsheet. I hope I can keep up with Bad Dad!

This is thru La Plata (back to TH):

Huron (46) > La Plata (47): 4 hrs 12 mins including travel
* Travel/transition: 47 mins
* Ascent: 1 hr 53 mins, 3,361' gain, 3.0 mi
* Descent: 92 mins, 3,335' down, 3.0 mi

Cumulative:
* 217 miles on foot (103 ascending, 114 descending)
* 116,043' elevation gain
* Travel/transition/rest 52 hrs
* 145.8 hours on foot (78.7 hrs ascending, 67.1 hrs descending)
* average while ascending 1.3 mph
* average while descending 1.7 mph
* overall average 1.5 mph
* 95.5 hrs (66% of on foot time) over 12,000' elevation
* 60.8 hrs (42%) over 13,000' elevation
* 11.9 hrs (8%) over 14,000' elevation

Not surprising and totally awesome....I bet there is a bit of hiking DNA in their blood.

Storm just blew thru Alma with hail, thunder and lightning. Moved off to east and it's fine now just in time for Andrew to get up on the ridge. GO BAD DAD GO!

Excerpted from Cave Dog's page http://www.thedogteam.com/14ers-Web_Pag ... frame.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

1960 - 52 peaks (the then recognized set of 14ers) - 52 days - Cleve McCarty
1974 - 54 peaks (the 300' prominence peaks, perhaps minus Challenger and plus N. Maroon and plus El Diente) - 33 days - the Climbing Smiths (George Smith and sons Flint, Quade, Cody, and Tyle), established the 3000' "Colorado" rule.
1976 - 54 peaks - 22 days - Steve Boyer
1980 - 54 peaks - 18d 15h 40m - Dick Walkers
1990 - 54 peaks - 16d 21h 35m - Quade and Tyle Smith (of the 1974 Climbing Smiths) - still the FKT *without* a support crew, followed Colorado Rule
1992 - 54 peaks - 15d 17h 19m - Adrian Crane, followed Colorado Rule
1993 - 55 peaks (Challenger Pt added) 14d 3h - Jeff Wagener (CD's page is silent on Colorado rule on this attempt and the next record, which does follow the Colorado Rule, is slower, so perhaps that's the distinguishing feature?)

1995 - 55 peaks (?) - 15d 9h 55m - Ricky Denesik & Rick Trujillo, followed Colorado Rule
1997 - 55 peaks (?) - 14d 0h 16m - Ricky Denesik (Rick Trujillo completed 39 before dropping), followed Colorado Rule
1999 - 55 peaks - 13d 22h 48m - Andrew Hamilton (yes, THAT Andrew Hamilton)
2000 - 55 peaks - 12d 15h 35m - Ricky Denesik (3rd record)

2000 - 55 peaks** - 10d 20h 26m - Ted Keizer "Cave Dog", followed Colorado Rule

2000 - 55 peaks - 14d 14h 49m - Danelle Ballengee **Women's record**

**Important - The 55 peaks is the traditional list of the 53 14ers with 300' of prominence plus N. Maroon and El Diente, which lack 300' of prominence. It appears that the earlier records of 54 peaks count these same mountains but exclude Challenger Pt, which barely has 300' of prominence, but used to be considered a subpeak/promontory of Kit Carson Pk. In addition to this group, we know Cave Dog also climbed Cameron -- but given Cameron's gentle summit and its location "on the way" to other peaks, its entirely possible, likely even, that it was submitted by some of the early record holders as well but simply not counted as a 'peak'. If this is the case, then by today's nomenclature, we would refer to those '55' lists as '56' peaks and the '54' lists as '55 peaks (and so on).

Andrew is presently attempting the 58 peaks which have informally risen to prominence as "the list" -- this is the 53 peaks with 300' prominence (which includes Challenger) plus N. Maroon and El Diente (the 55 list), plus Cameron, plus the other USGS-recognized 14ers which lack 300' of prominence, but still get named on maps: N. Eolus and Conundrum. Cave Dog did not include N. Eolus or Conundrum on his long-standing record, so if Andrew breaks the record, the list of 58 will become the de facto speed climb standard. Perhaps someday if we resolve the height of Sunlight Spire to be at least 14,000, it will be added as the 59th 14er, albeit another one which lacks 300' of prominence. Who knows?
