It occurs to me we still do not know who the Baron is.

Not true. Anyone following the thread at the end and paying attention was given the answer. That's why he signed off.

You were misled. He was never one person.

I think perhaps you're mistaken. Here is the Baron's riposte to the blunderer that told everyong who he was.

Darth Vader is Luke's dad.
Neo is in a computer-generated dream.
Verbal Kint is Keyser Soze.
Soylent Green is people.
The narrator is Tyler Durden
Bruce Willis was dead the whole time.

I hope I ruined something for you, too.
Seems pretty clear he was bugged, eh?

Can you unlearn what you now know?

Like the ending in Sphere.

Knowing the source does not in any way diminish the knowledge and entertainment I got from his posts. And there was a style and consistency to those posts that make it hard for me to believe it was multiple people responding.

Sphere mostly sucked as I recall.

Yes, Sphere did suck. But the ridiculous ending would serve well here.

At some point most will forget this Baron person and/or another one will appear. He was more than mere troll. Jeff Battin was always welcome in his many incarnations on rec.climbing and later supertopo. One of the funniest ruses was E. B. Shoe and then later BURT BRONSON. Ha, good times.

Is he Yvon Chouinard?

Hoe lee shite!

Highpilgrim, my compliments. I am attempting to regain a semblance of composure. Incoherent guttorial sounds are spewing from my gaping maw. My underwear is soiled.

In a word: Funny.

My pleasure.

It's been pretty freaking boring around here lately. Welcome back.
