PSA Highway 50 Gunnison to Montrose roadwork closures

Post by gb »

I don't remember seeing a thread about this, so just a heads-up that highway 50 will be closed extensively from 4/21 to 11/22, with very limited openings. Lake City access won't be affected, but you'll want to time your travels or pick a different route if heading to the San Juans from the East. https://www.gunnisontimes.com/index.php ... -closures?

Closures of U.S. 50 at Little Blue Canyon are set to begin next month, as soon as April 1. The closure area is from mile points 123 to 127, roughly halfway between Gunnison and Montrose.

Alternating one-way traffic will move through the fourmile site on weekdays for two hours in the morning, one hour at noon and two hours in the evening. Weekends, as well as Friday evenings and Monday mornings, will be open to twoway traffic without delays.

this will actually be going on for a couple of years--not sure the plans have been finalized yet.

That's why there is an article linked with the plans.

I'm sure most people already know this, but Highway 92 is an alternate route and a prettier drive anyway.

It looks like getting to the Cimarrons will be most affected. You can still get to Coxcomb/Redcliff and company from Ouray, but Little Cimarron Road (Sheep, Silver and friends) is only accessible from 50.

True, but all of the construction on US 50 is east of there. You could still come from Montrose. US 50 between Montrose and Little Cimmaron won't be affected.

I was speaking more to the how much out of the way it might be for someone from the Front Range vs. can you actually get to it. Heck, access is open Friday night through Sunday in addition to the other windows. The closure is not that big a deal unless your itinerary places you in the wrong spot at the wrong time.

Coming from Montrose, lake city access will be effected as the closure area is right before
the lake city cutoff shortcut.
I think timing the fully open times will be my goal, and if I cannot do that, I'll take the 92 detour as it is easily accessible from here.
I realize such things are a necessity, but I'll be passing through that area 10 or more times this summer, and it may be a small inconvenience.
Thanks for all of the information.
