Re: Highest you've ever camped during winter

Post by Scott P »

I've only ever camped in the east during winter, so I was wondering what kind of elevations others had camped at.
In Colorado only or everywhere?

Here are the five highest elevations that I have camped in Colorado in winter:

1. 12,000 at Fourmile Creek (approach to Mt. Sherman) on January 18-19 2013.
2. 11,860 on Mount Yale on March 7-8 2008.
3. 11,750 at Pacific Creek (approach to Crystal Peak) on January 7-8 2011.
4. 11,560 at Fourmile Creek (approach to Mt. Sherman on December 22-23 2006.
5. 11,400 in Horn Fork Basin (approach to Mt. Harvard) on March 18-19 2011.

For all practical purposes, my camp at 11,540 near Hoosier Pass (approach to Mt Silverheels) on December 9-10 2005 was a winter camp as well and may take the #5 spot if you aren't picky about calendar vs. meterological winter.
Is it feasible for good old Jon to sleep on the summits during winter
It could be done, but just climbing the Colorado 14ers in winter is not an easy task so I don't think it will be done anytime soon. With the right equipment, you can sleep on top of the 14ers in winter, if you really wanted to.

12,500-12,600 on Sherman in December back is 2013.

Highest I have ever camped - 23,300ft on Broad Peak in Pakistan for C3

haha in Colorado I usually camp at tree line as it is just more comfortable. I have bivy'd on the side of a mountain before though, probably around 12,000ft.
You could sleep on a summit during winter, a strong 4 season tent and a good job putting it up would get the job done. After all 14,000ft is not THAT high.

As Scott P said, it could be done, if you really wanted to (but who does!?)

You can touch the void, just don't fall into it.

Ishinca valley, Peru. 14,000 feet.
I have phenomenal route-finding abilities. Specifically, I have an uncanny knack for selecting the path of most resistance.

Technically at 14,000 feet on Orizaba, but thats in a hut and its basically car camping.

Otherwise, maybe 1000 feet. I'm not a big winter camper.

Black lake in glacier gorge for a winter trough route on longs peak.
The boulder field for a cables route on longs that was not attempted the next day because of intense snow and 70 plus mph winds.
