Re: Kansas Backpacking
Another to consider is the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, just outside of Strong City. There are 40+ miles of trail, great vistas, and livestock encounters to spice things up a little. My son and I have been "practice hiking" there to prep for a 14er trip to CO in late July. For camping, it's a short drive from the TPP to Cottonwood Falls, there's a reservoir nearby that has quite a few first come/first served sites right on the lake and a short "waterfall" hike, too. I use the term waterfall, only because if the reservoir is over full, water falls over some sandstone rocks. It's the Chase State Fishing Lake (imaginative, I know). But you could get some good mileage in and have a place to primitive camp. The city of Cottonwood Falls has nice places to stay and some nice eateries, as well.
