Weminuche - No Name Creek or Tenmile Creek

Post by Fisching »

Morning,

Searching for beta, TR, and GPX points have not yielded any definitive answer. Does anyone have any knowledge if there's a trail connecting No Name Creek or the Tenmile Creek to the Colorado Trail to the north (where it crosses over the Animas River and heads up Molas Pass)?

The east side of the river, north of No Name Creek, appears steep on topographic maps, so I'm wondering if the only way to return to Molas Pass is to ford the river and follow the train tracks.

I've been up Tenmile Creek from the Animas River and on our way to our fording point we couldn't find any sign of a trail paralleling the river on its east side. And the terrain indeed looked pretty tough over there too.

That said, the walk down the train tracks was quick and easy, as was crossing the river just north of where Tenmile Creek joins the Animas (early Sept of average snow year). We encountered one railroad employee working on the tracks while we were walking - Rod - who gave us zero hard time for being on the tracks, probably technically trespassing. We only got to moon one trainload of tourists before we crossed though - bummer!

Once across there was a difficult to follow at times, but very much there, trail the whole way to Balsam Lake and beyond.

I did it two years ago during the great fire that the railroad started. Tracks are the way to go, besides a few bridges, there are no canalizing points where you couldn’t jump off the tracks should a train come through. The East side is indeed cliffed out much of the way.
