Waterton Canyon is OPEN!

Post by boudreaux »

Waterton Canyon is open again! Been open since October 30th to be exact. Been anticipating this event for a long time, exactly 2 months of closure!

Great news!

Wonder what it'll be like in future years?
That is, how much is 'bear activity' vs. 'too much human activity' vs. 'too many humans being dumb around bears' activity?

Bummer that it was closed during, essentially, the 2 best weather-and-color months of the year, and it would be unfortunate if that were the case moving forward.

There should be a lot of turkey activity going on about now, hopefully DW won't close it down again for fear of someone getting gobbled up!

Would rather have a bear take a selfie. Not only would it look better, but it would demonstrate, once again, how much smarter and aware of their surroundings animals are than are humans.

The Revenant movie presented a savage, but beautiful picture of nature. The bear scene would make think twice about backdoors. However almost all my bear encounters have been in the California Sierras where the black bears grab or beg for your food and not your flesh.

The upper part of the canyon (anything past mile 3.2) is open now, but the entrance is still closed to high water. It also looks like Denver Water still even isn't even done with its project, so the closures will keep on coming. Whoopee! :x

Waterton is scheduled to fully open on Sunday 5/15. The 1st 3.2 miles will have restrictions for access to the river because of high water. The dam project has been postponed til the Fall because of the late snows of the last month. But it appeared to be on schedule for May 1st til the recent weather hindered the completion. So expect more closures in late September into October.
