"near-dead" 14er hiker recovers

Post by peter303 »

Hiking Paradise Trail on flanks of Mt. Rainier in snowstorm and lost for a full day. Heart stopped for 45 minutes at hospital. Might have been in a state of quasi-hibernation which helped him.

( I hiked that trail last year)

Amazing story!
I look up to the mountains - does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! Psalm 121:1-2

Mountain Madness taught me how to do this when I was preparing for Mt Baker. It could save your life one day.

The look on his face says it all, glad he recovered.

As Billy Crystal said in "The Princess Bride", he was only mostly dead.
Good to hear good news on a deal like this for once.

I had never heard of an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machine before.

“In that process, blood is pumped outside of the body to a heart-lung machine that removes carbon dioxide and sends oxygen-filled blood back to tissues in the body.”

Sounds like something that could save more than a few lives over the years.

We use it all the time in pediatric cardiology. While it sounds pretty simple there are a lot of associated issues and problems. But yes, it saves many lives.

Wow, great story, great outcome. Praise be to God from whom all blessings flow.

ECMO is 20-plus-year-old technology that, as said above, has saved a lot of lives and been used extensively in pedi medicine. Sounds like this young man took advantage of the full spectrum available to him: technology, medical skill, rescue skill, and the helping hand of the Lord.
