Fatality on Pikes Peak

Post by hootenatty »

I was sad to hear this morning that a hiker perished on Pikes Peak yesterday afternoon. I haven't been able to find any information besides the news article linked below.

They died at devils playground? I'm gonna guess it was either a heart attack, or someone slipped while doing a selfie or photo op on one of the boulders. Usually not a dangerous area.

Couldn’t be the weather it was great yesterday. The article notes a death on the Manitou Incline first I heard of that.

The Incline death was a 63 year old man who had a heart attack. RIP.

That makes three deaths due to heart attack on the Incline.

A friend and I hiked out to One-Mile Pinnacle yesterday afternoon and returned to the truck at the DP parking lot a little after 4 pm. Saw all the emergency vehicles and wondered what was going on but we headed down not realizing what happened. It was windy but I don't remember it being bad enough that a chopper couldn't land. Very sad! Condolences to the hiker's family.

The name Devils Playground derives from lightning storms that happen at times. It is getting kind of cold for thunderstorms. However I heard something in the weather report about thundersnow when cold front rolled by Wednesday.

Isnt this spot the parking area for the summit shuttle during construction? He may have not have been hiking.

I believe the shuttle service from DP had ended on 1 October...

An update with a little more info. It looks like the person involved was not a hiker...

The article doesn't give a ton of info. Basically the guy was there to drive the highway and his death occurred somewhere near Devil's Playground...
