This is pretty common in Europe ski resorts too and I've seen news about more accidents with it. There are supposed to be some sort of webs to catch the ball if the ski resort ends above a cliff or above a steep slope but too often, the ball gets completely out of the control and jumps over the web or rolles around. I'd compare it to the accidents on rollercoasters...Sometimes happen and if they happen, they turn bad.
