My vote is for an unnamed peak in TEXAS.
Called John Deutschendorf (Denver) Peak.

They probably are wrong , but I think the lady wants to rename the eastermost of the two (identical height) high points on the mountain, which is basically the main summit since it's closer to the middle of the summit ridge (an arbitrary criterion that I just made up, since I didn't go to the west summit when I was there ).

First, I think naming a sub-summit of Sopris after John Denver is silly.

And now a personal story. After Christmas 1968, my brother, my friend George and I drove to Aspen from Indiana for a little skiing. My brother and I had a 2 week Christmas break from army training. My brother was a folk music fan, played a little guitar, had Chad Mitchell Trio albums and the newer Mitchell Trio one after Chad left and was replaced by John Denver. He saw that Denver was playing in Snowmass.

We went out to Snowmass from Aspen to see him play. He was in small bar in Snowmass, the Leather Jug. It wasn't very crowded, I don't think there were a dozen people in the place. Denver would play a set, then go sit at a table and lay his head down on the table til it was time for the next set. My brother went over and talked to him between a couple of sets.

The next summer, I was out in Colorado again from Indiana, and a friend and I were in Aspen again and went out to Snowmass again to the Leather Jug. Denver was still playing there. There was a costume party going on and Denver was walking around socializing, laughing, just having a good time between sets.

What do you think, might have been "..the summer of his 27th year..."? Probably just badly hung over in December and adjusted to the new home by July. Still, sure looks like it fit the song.

Hey, I want a peak named after me! Oh, and none of those scraggly sub-peaks, but, something majestic, like Capitol.... yes, AL's Peak! boy that sounds great. (By the way, I want this because of entitlement: I am Italian and, we, after all, have discovered America and named the place!)

Well, in accordance to Board of Geographic Names criteria, you gotta be dead for at least five years before they will consider naming something after you.....

Coloradans have always had mixed feelings about the guy -- I can remember when "John Denver Go Home" was a popular bumper sticker. Personally I like his music, but I also like Mt. Sopris the way it is. There are dozens of unnamed 13ers in this state (e.g. Point 13,722, which is near Aspen). Surely one of them would make a more suitable namesake than Mt. Sopris, which is a major Colorado icon in its own right, predating John Denver's arrival.

"The John Denver Collection" is one of the CDs I brought to work tonight to pass the wee hours.

I like the idea, but agree that an unamed peak would be be more appropriate. After this first petition fails, then maybe that is what will happen in a later proposal.
