Snow is key for my goal of eventually finishing the 14ers without ever being bored. The harder ones are super fun in summer, but there is no easy 14er in winter, so I'm saving a lot of the boring ones to hopefully do as winter ascents. I'll probably also be able to snag some by taking my kids or some inexperienced friends up some of the less challenging peaks that I haven't crossed off, and the fun will be in getting to see them experience it within their abilities and comfort level. There are also plenty of peaks with boring standard routes but interesting non-standard routes.

Yeah, we know the real reason why you want to do the "boring" ones with snow. You've got a whole slew of kids to haul your ass up the hill in a sled.
Yes but the true joy is getting to see them enjoy for the first time the experience of pulling daddy up the mountain in the cold

This idea is quite neat indeed, if not a little sad and/or sobering perhaps.

Baron Spire (aka "Old Smoothie") here in Idee-ho....I was so curious to go check out the acclaimed bolt ladder on the final pitch put in by no other than Beckey. Apparently, he had just left his bit in one of the holes and you had to sling that haha.

Alas, an earthquake took out the entire peak. Well, the EQ did a ton of damage to the peak and it finally got finished off somehow. Here's a hilarious video showing that:

The same earthquake took this guy out. My homie and I stood on top of it tho, so that was good. Was a surprisingly very fun climb actually.

Perhaps we've seen the last legal ascents of Lindsey and Hamilton.

yes I may be right there with the OP for the slowest finishings.

if ever. I have as of now convinced myself that I do not need to climb Capital - or maybe even maroon bells.

but I climbed elbert at age 16 in 1993 - and didn't pick up another until like 2001 or 02

and then I took Missouri last fall after like 6 years out of the 14er game altogether.

i prefer actual solitude in the woods - so I am happy being on the mtn across the way from the 14er. better view anyway!

At my pace, 17 in 10 years, a whole lot of outdoorsy interests besides hiking peaks, and my place of residence far away from Colorado, I might be pretty darn old when I'm done, if I'm ever done; plus, I'm getting more interested in 13ers to stay away from crowds, so these will slow down my quest of the remaining 41 (one of the things covid taught me: social distancing was way underrated!).

Makes me wonder what if there is a known age record among 14er hikers (does not have to be a finisher, does not have to be Capitol peak or whatever gnarly class 4 alternate route). I would bet it's 80+.

^^ oldest person to ascend a 14er? That’s a good question. I read a book about Longs Peak in 2007 that said the oldest known person to climb it did so on his 85th birthday. I’d have to think there have been some folks older than they who have climbed some 14er.

You are slower than me. I started in 1979 and I'm 41 down and 17. But it's all because of a fire that stopped me in '78.

Possibly Jim Strub. This article is a few years old (when he was 89), but I believe he climbed Pikes this year which would make him 92:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/gazette.co ... 5.amp.html.

Anyway my dad is 78 and he's still climbing peaks harder than most of the 14ers and my friend Mike Kelsey is still doing hard core stuff that is harder than any of the CO 14ers and will turn 79 soon.

My grandparents climbed Mt. Sinai when they were in their mid to late 80s and it's as hard as at least some of the 14ers.

I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

This gentleman is me...I still haven't seen any posts claiming a "better" SKT that bests my 49.25 years, though I do see some up-and-comers approaching (slowly of course) in my rear view mirror...best of luck to the challengers and as they say here in New Mexico: Carpe Manana!
