Isn't Halfmoon campground by Holy Cross - like 20miles+ from Elbert? One heck of a fast Iguana - could be in New Mexico by now if that info is real...
There's a Halfmoon Campground at the base of Mt. Elbert.
Ah Halfmoon East Campground and Halfmoon West Campground.
Still, those are at about 10k and treeline isn't until about 12k and summit another couple k above - that's a lot of range...

Would make a great news story though...
Unless it really is a hoax, I would guess that it couldn't move very fast given the temperatures. It has been cool with rain and hail on on off all day where I'm staying near Fairplay.
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.
I can’t imagine an iguana traveling that far. There is more to this story than we are being told. Food isn’t a concern but temperature and humidity might pose a serious risk. It wouldn’t be able to digest food anyways at the temps up there. Hopefully someone can find it and not return it to that stupid owner. As someone who used to keep many reptiles, this is the kind of thing that ruins it for the responsible keepers. Anyone who takes a pet reptile camping should have their toenails removed one by one and then left on the summit barefoot.

I agree, it seem just about impossible that an iquana could go from the campground to the summit under its own power. Assuming the whole thing isn't a hoax, somebody's not telling the truth about how it ended up there. Then again I can't imagine why anybody would carry an iguana to the summit either.
My brother had an iguana. When it got loose it could literally take hours to find... inside his tiny little apartment. To the people searching Mount Freaking Elbert for one, I wish you luck.
Iguanas are very fast as long as the weather is warm. I've seen them run up trees like squirrels in Florida. When it gets cold they hibernate and fall out of the trees.
