Re: Your favorite __er in CO (14er, 13er, etc.)
So Scott, you're saying the highest point is the easy "ear" with the old cables bolted into it? That's suprising to me, but OK. Huh...go figure. Fwiw, I've climbed that one too long ago. Maybe 5.0? but I suspect there's a sub-5th class scramble somewhere.Scott P wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 12:27 pmThe highest ear is definitely like that, but the point marked Rabbit Ears Peak isn't so bad (and much better than the rock on nearby Chimney Rock).
For years the part marked Rabbit Ears Peak was considered the highest point, but I went up there and climbed and by lying with my eye level with the peak and using the background peaks was pretty sure that the East Ear was higher.
I started a thread on LOJ saying so and Teresa Gergen went up there with a hand level since she was finishing all the 10ers and had climbed the same point I did. She also verified that the East Ear was higher. I imagine that this disappointed a lot of people since the East Ear is indeed a crumbling mess and everyone or almost everyone counting the ranked summits climbed the wrong one.
The Rabbit Ears Peak is still really fun to climb though and the Ears still really interesting to look at, so it's still my favorite 10er even though I likely won't stand on the highest ear.

Both felt craptastically craptastic.HikerGuy wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 12:08 pmI didn't think it was that bad...I'm starting to believe I have an abnormally high tolerance for loose crap Now gaining the ridge to Pilot Knob's summit block is what I consider craptastic.Tornadoman wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 11:48 am True on that! I have done 13,577 from both sides... Lily Lake ascent was craptastic.
The Pilot Knob ridge access offers zero fun, plenty of rockfall, but a much better return on investment than 13577.

Wow...not much love for El Diente, huh? I enjoyed the North Buttress route so much I’ve done it twice now. It’s not going to top out my list but I would say it’s definitely up there for me. I selected my top choices for variety of snow and rock/scrambling routes:
14er: Longs (so many snow routes on the Longs/Meeker Cirque)
13er: Ypsilon (for Blitzen Ridge and “Y” Couloir)
12er: Hallett (Chaos Couloir and Great Dihedral)
11er: Petit Grepon
I didn’t realize I had such an affinity for RMNP until I saw this thread. Lots of runner up options, especially in the 13er department though (Jagged, Vestal, Lizard Head, Cathedral’s Pearl Couloir).

Agree 100%. There is an awesome pay off for Pilot Knob, it was my second favorite peak last year even after the suck. 13577 does not offer much other than the tiny dopamine hit for checking the checkbox.

Yes. El Diente wins for me since it harbors the best snow climb in the state (Luttrell route). Still need to go N Butt.Wildernessjane wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 3:13 pm Wow...not much love for El Diente, huh? I enjoyed the North Buttress route so much I’ve done it twice now. Seems like the times that I need a mountain the most are the times that I can not get to them.

Re: Your favorite __er in CO (14er, 13er, etc.)
Thanks for starting this thread! I’d been wanting to start one like this, but either haven’t gotten around to it yet.
14: Single peak: Capitol (honorable mention for Needle, Sneffels, and Wetterhorn). Combo: hard to choose between Crestones and the Bells. Though LB-Blanca might have been my favorite 14er combo.
13: Pilot Knob (yes some looseness, but fun scrambling and then amazing views. US Grant comes just after, and Vermilion, Meeker, Adams, or Ouray after that).

https://listsofjohn.com/peak/143
12: Richthofen (cool island lake below, fun scramble at the top. Ridge is better than N face - loose)
https://listsofjohn.com/peak/877
11: Lamborn (seems to be random, but actually has a cool summit block and really great views)
https://listsofjohn.com/peak/2163
10: San Luis Peak (rather obscure, close to home, cool views and fun summit scramble). Unranked: Mt Vigil (towering dropoff to the east, great views, fun summit scramble - either low class 5 or class 3 depending on the route. Where I got engaged!)
https://listsofjohn.com/peak/2830
https://listsofjohn.com/peak/3120
9: 9112 or Dome Rock (cool huge obscure rock formations). Unranked: Sentinel Rock or Mt Crest Crags (fun, obscure, great views)

https://listsofjohn.com/peak/4095
https://listsofjohn.com/peak/214939
https://listsofjohn.com/peak/218200
8: Long Scraggy or Cathedral Spires (good views and fun climbs)
https://listsofjohn.com/peak/4328
https://listsofjohn.com/peak/4627
7: The Palisade (fun climbing and great views. My first roped summit climb)
https://listsofjohn.com/peak/6000
6: 6955 or Mesa de Maya (great views of Paradox Valley and distant views of San Juans/La Sal; fairly prominent and has views of some Front Range peaks)
https://listsofjohn.com/peak/6048
https://listsofjohn.com/peak/6071
5: Aggie Peak (not the most remote, but still good views of Horsetooth Reservoir and Ft Collins)
https://listsofjohn.com/peak/6558
4: Two Buttes (basically best eastern county HP and 4er.. rises up quite suddenly amidst the plains. Also lowest ranked summit in CO)
https://listsofjohn.com/mobile/peak/6754
Haven’t yet done 7071, The Castle, Garfield near GJ, or Raleigh. Or Dallas, Jagged, Vestal, Coxcomb, Lizard Head, Arrow and other cool 13ers mentioned.
