Re: Decalibron?
I was under the impression that new signs had to be put up re: liability concerns.

Lots of info here:

PS, I very much dislike private land in the mountains blocking access. I just don't want to see the peaks permanently closed; that's all.

Re: Decalibron?
Thanks - I was reading about Bross and was planning on staying on the trail just below the summit. I believe that stays off private land and, assuming I did the other three, I would consider that one summited as well, FWIW.Scott P wrote: ↑Tue Jun 22, 2021 12:58 pmLots of info here:

Please keep us posted if you get an update from CFI. You can see I have a tight timeline but will work around it if Decalibron is off limits when I go there...still lots to do with an hour or two of that range.

Re: Decalibron?
Thanks for the link and the timestamps. I fully agree that we should respect the landowners' wishes to keep these peaks accessible.Scott P wrote: ↑Tue Jun 22, 2021 12:58 pmLots of info here:

I do dislike the argument they use (and many people here use) that people going onto this private property is just like walking into someone's house or backyard. That seems a bit obtuse, because these guys own such huge swaths of land that they're doing basically nothing with that it looks exactly the same as many public National Forest lands. That's like saying someone stealing a stick from the ground in your yard is the same as stealing your car, because they're both private property. Ideally neither would happen, but conflating the two is not a compelling argument.
Hopefully the liability laws eventually change to absolve the landowners of responsibility for the potential injuries of hikers (although as far as I know, this has never happened in Colorado?) so then we don't need to worry about these issues anymore.

Re: Decalibron?
Just spoke on the phone with Brian at Colorado Fourteeners Initiative.
He just had a conversation with CFI's Executive Director and as far as they are aware, though the gate is open, there is still no agreement in place between the Town of Alma and the private landowners opening up the peaks to hiking.

Re: Decalibron?
Thanks for the info. Did they have any insight about any type of timeline? Since the closure signs were removed (persumably by the landowner?), how would anyone even know (unless they are reading this thread) that the peaks were even closed? Without the closure sign, the signs at the trailhead make it sound like the peaks (other than Bross) are open.Carl_Healy wrote: ↑Wed Jun 23, 2021 12:46 pm Just spoke on the phone with Brian at Colorado Fourteeners Initiative.

Re: Decalibron?
He didn't mention anything about an expected timeline unfortunately. Brian also said he was a bit behind on answering emails and messages from social media on the subject.Scott P wrote: ↑Wed Jun 23, 2021 1:30 pmThanks for the info. Maybe someone in the town of Alma may know more?
Standby...
Ok calling Cindy at the Town of Alma she said the gate is open and Kite Lake is maintained by the Town of Alma, but she wasn't aware if the landowner had opened the peaks...
I'm not sure how to get a more definitive answer if even after calling Alma and CFI there's still some uncertainty?

Re: Decalibron?
Yeah, the landowner's sending mixed messages if the signs are taken down, yet a formal opening announcement hasn't been made. Perhaps things have been figured out but not yet publicized, or perhaps things are still in limbo yet the signs are missing.Scott P wrote: ↑Wed Jun 23, 2021 1:30 pm

Re: Decalibron?
Despite the two calls I made today I don't think I really got a definitive answer either way.
If anyone knows a better POC someone should probably try that.

This person who is apparently in loop says that they are still closed:Carl_Healy wrote: ↑Wed Jun 23, 2021 1:50 pm He didn't mention anything about an expected timeline unfortunately. Brian also said he was a bit behind on answering emails and messages from social media on the subject.

It's easy to see why so many are confused.

Re: Decalibron?
The communication on this has been so odd and frankly, disappointing. Basically the only people relaying the closure (or at least on the frontlines of getting the message out) have been seemingly random people on this forum/the fb page/reddit/ect. I haven't seen an official press release(s) from the USFS, the City of Alma, CFI, CMC, ect who are apparently all part of a working group trying to resolve the issue. Maybe I just missed it?
It's not hard to understand how someone would just see a random person saying "they are closed!" and not be skeptical, especially in the environment common on social media in regards to transplants/visitors/ect. It would seem the most credible way to get this information out would be a formal release from ANY of those organizations that then everyone can point people to.

+1 Especially since it’s well past June 1, the original proposed opening date.dwoodward13 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 24, 2021 7:24 am The communication on this has been so odd and frankly, disappointing.
