Hey everyone,
I recently relocated from the Sangres to Durango and am looking for a few hikes and climbs I can do this time of the year. Preferably within a couple hours of town ideally around 10-20 miles that will take me above 12,500ft.
I have a lot of snowshoeing experience however I have very little experience with axes/crampons. I am hoping to develop these skills so any beginner spring routes are very welcome.
Research has turned up 13,832 & 13,811, Snowmesa/Baldy Cinco, and Kendall Mt/Pk. If anyone has any additional info on those that would also be very appreciated.
The La Plata's are very alluring, but I'm unsure of the go to peaks in winter.
Thanks for taking the time!

I'm hoping to do Baldy Cinco this month if you want a partner
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

Red Mtn Pass area has some peaks I've done in winter/winter-like conditions. Reports below.
The safest is McMillan.
Anvil, 12,531

McMillan, 12,804

Brown Mtn A, 13,something
https://www.14ers.com/php14ers/triprepo ... m=tripmine
Has one slope above treeline that could avalanche in bad conditions, but is W facing and was mostly bare (windswept?) when we were there.
UN 13,510B & "Telluride Pk"

Definitely has areas that can avalanche, and has killed someone a couple of years ago. I think I linked the CAIC report to mine. We ascended to climber's right of area that slid.

Trico Peak is a good one, but be careful with avalanche terrain
