Opinions please

Postby JA_son27 » Sun Jun 07, 2009 10:02 am

Having just come back from hiking Redcloud and Sunshine I wanted to update my peak list, but I re-summited Redcloud on the way back and was curious to what people think of multiple summits. Should I in good conscience say that I summited redcloud twice or only once? I know it's a matter of opinion but I want my list to show integrity. Thank you for your opinions.

You've got to ask yourself, "Did I climb that mountain twice?" "Well, did ya punk?'

.......is the loneliest number that you'll ever do. Sorry couldn't help myself. I think once. Unless there is a three thousand elevation difference on the traverse. (Which I know there isn't.) You can honestly tell people that have been on the summit of Redcloud twice. That would be true.
Seems like the times that I need a mountain the most are the times that I can not get to them.

I suppose you could say you summitted Redcloud twice or revisited the summit a second time, but it counts as 1 ascent.

Well I climbed Castle then went over to Conundrum, then went back up over Castle and counted as two ascents or least that's what my friends dad said it counts but once again I suppose it matters on opinion. I'm not sure if you can say you've climbed it twice but you can say that you've been on that summit twice.

If you were to follow the 3000 foot rule your hike would actually equal 0 Redcloud summits and 1 on Sunshine. I personally don't follow that rule but I think you're pushing it to count that as more than 1 summit of each peak. Interestingly, even though it would have shortened your mileage/vertical I would give you credit for a third peak if you had done Sundog peak on the way out. I guess it has something to do with forward progress and traveling over new terrain to me. Otherwise you could just jog the saddle back and forth between Grays and Torreys all day and rack up hundreds of 14er ascents in no time.

It's your list; your achievements - call it two summits if you want. I would only consider it two summits if you did it, then went home, then came back some other time.

But, until a sanctioned entity within the hiking/climbing community awards medals and carves your name in granite for successfully completing 1, 54, or 2,000 summits the "official" way and only that way, with a 3,000-foot gain (or whatever it wants to be), I think only a tiny minority of people who are trying to set those rules and live by them. If you want to elevate your achievements to that stratosphere be my guest. I am just happy to get to the top of any sort of peak before the storms come, so if there's only 500-feet of gain, I take it for what it's worth - it's still an achievement for a guy who doesn't live in the mountains, didn't hike/climb his whole life and has a full-time job that keeps me far from being an athletic specimin.

Thank you for all of your opinions, looks like it is a no for the double summit. By the way, since there are no sanctioned entities within the hiking/climbing community giving out awards for achievements I look to 14ers.com for advice and I usually stick by it. Thanks again.
