North Maroon is Ranked

Post by bdloftin77 »

Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to report that we have a new 14er joining the ranks of the ranked! The USGS maps of North Maroon Peak are missing several contours near its saddle, the top of the Bell Chord couloir. Adam Klopp and I independently (not knowing that the other was analyzing) verified that the saddle is at 13,693’ instead of the erroneous 13,780’ upgrading its prominence from 234’ to 329’. Welcome, North Maroon!

Yep, already added it to my post in the 2022 goals thread #-o

Maybe I should save it for my highest 700 finisher? I can't believe the map was off by almost 100 feet! Looks like the only lists out of the ones I am working on that I actually finished are Holy Cross Wilderness and Eagle County (thank you Castle for having the east summit be the true one)

That leaves Dallas off the centennial list at least until the data for Challenger comes back. Pretty likely that Challenger isn’t a ranked peak and the 53/58 list will still be in effect - just with a peak swap.

This is awesome! The 2 Bells look like such distinct peaks, glad to hear that they are indeed distinct by the 300' rule!

Awesome news for those that climbed it.

Though, if you climbed it when it was unranked does that mean you have to climb it again now that it’s ranked to get the ranked credit?
I should be on a mountain

Congrats to North Maroon Peak! =D>

Would aspiring Centennial finishers prefer to climb North Maroon, or Dallas Peak? North Maroon is technically easier, but the YDS rating alone doesn't tell the whole story. (I haven't climbed either.) But of course, until Challenger is analyzed, the demotion of Dallas is not final.

That is super cool news! I hope Dallas doesn't get demoted. It's a worthy peak and adds a bit of challenge to the cents. Makes them not a gimme
