RV to 14er TH

14ers

I appreciate the supportive nature of these posts / responses. I’m planning on driving a 24’ RV through Colorado with my two sons (11 and 14) late July, we’re physically fit. Hopeful to get guidance on best (not crowded) 14er we could park the RV at trailhead, hike, spend night in tents at tree line, summit in early AM and head back to RV. Thanks

Mt Yale would be easy. Avalanche TH and Denny TH are about 3 miles apart, both on a paved road with a campground between. (Not sure what hook-ups) up to 50' RV. I did this one as a day trip well over a decade ago so I don't recall what the tent site situation at tree line looks like.

Missouri Gulch TH is dirt, but very smooth. There are a couple switchbacks that may be interesting, but the road is fairly wide. This one offers you access to Missouri, Belford and Oxford. There is a open camping area just down the road at clear creek reservoir campground. No hook ups, the place is huge and wide open and spread out. park and camp pretty much anywhere. After you hike in, there are countless places to pitch a tent in the valley below Belford and Missouri, which is what I did.

I know there are many others that will fit the bill, but it's 1 a.m. right now.

Is your RV going to be a rental? If so, check to see where they do and do not want their rig driven. Even if a road here is recommended as drive-able, some roads to trail heads will have tree branches that may leave scratches/gouges from front to rear on a tall and wide RV.

We had lots of fun basecamping out of a 27' RV in the Lake City-area San Juans. The Mill Creek Campground has good access to Handies and Redcloud/Sunshine, and if you're ok with a slightly narrow/bumpy road (IIRC), we enjoyed parking the RV in pullouts on the lower access road to Uncompahgre and Wetterhorn, near the point where the 4wd road to Uncompahgre's upper trailhead splits off. Uncompahgre would be a reasonable intro 14er for fit hikers, and it would have good camping at treeline (and it is a long enough walk from the potential RV parking spots that it would make sense to tent camp, too).
