Noob question for Mt Massive

Post by Glennktx »

Hi everyone,
I'm training to climb Mt Rainier in September and picked Mt Massive for a training climb on Sunday August 4th. Im training in Texas at low altitude so i really want to see how my body will handle the altitude. I'm taking the main route on the east as I want the longer hike for more of a workout.

So, on to my questions:

1) Trail runners, trail hiking shoes or over the ankle hiking boots?
2) Is there snow on the trail still? Should I bring gaiters?
3) Is 5:30 am early enough to get a parking space?
4) Is a helmet advised on this route?

Thanks everyone in advance.
