Re: Orizaba rescue
Oh, crap:
I'm glad I tagged this one before the stupid permits started. The governments of Puebla and Veracruz states, along with the National Defense Ministry, said they planned to revise rules on access to the peak to prevent inadequately trained or poorly equipped climbers from risking their lives.

Re: Orizaba rescue
I thought there was pretty much just one of two routes to get to the base of the glacier. They must have been pretty far off to get lost.
Also, "On Thursday, the body of a US hiker was recovered from the peak during a risky operation in which a rescuer fell into a ravine and was injured."
Ravine? I didn't see any ravines when I was there two years ago.

Re: Orizaba rescue
Supposedly Orizaba is extra icy this year. Or so we were told last week while climbing other Mexican Volcanoes.
I'm old, slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

Re: Orizaba rescue
Given the mishaps recently, I would say it’s a near certainty.

Re: Orizaba rescue
When I was there, there was someone about to go up with nothing but crampons and hiking poles. I think he was from Europe.

Re: Orizaba rescue
The ravines must be the labyrinth area. Definitely some gullies in there, and if it's icy, fairly dangerous. I hope the hikers injured made it out ok.
