I don't understand why some are suggesting going over 300 miles out of their way to see hills that are no different from the hills on the eastern plains of Colorado.

Sorry folks, as Johnny Cash once sang "Listen, I've traveled every road in this here land!".
"Kansas City, Sioux City, Cedar City, Dodge City, what a pity."

Can you imagine what the people of Dubois, WY would do if you called the town name by its French pronunciation?

Flagler, CO memorial park - peaceful shaded place to stretch your legs - just 1/2 mile north of the Flagler exit off I-70 -

Tragedy struck Flagler in 1951 when 20 people were killed and many injured in a devastating accident at an Air Show. A plane attempting a maneuver, the pilot miscalculated and struck scores of people who were lining the streets in large numbers to view the show. The local park has a memorial for those who passed, many which were children.

What about Camp Amache, which was the internment camp for Japanese-Americans during WWII. It is my understanding that the site is now a museum.

Plan to hit Sand Creek Massacre NHS, https://www.nps.gov/sand/planyourvisit/basicinfo.htm, sometime. But I'll wait until the visitor center has reopened.

I was thinking the Wild Animal Sanctuary but that's more north of the city, but a cool place to see the animals if they are out

I combined San Creek park with Fort Bent visit, camping inbetween at Lake Martin. But all these are rather south of the I70 trek of the OP.

Thanks for the all suggestions! This is the point I tell you all that you helped me plan a birthday trip for my dog, Sprinkles. He's 12 this year. Happy birthday buddy!

Thanks for this idea! It was worth the detour.
