Women's California 14er Speed Record Attempt

Post by andrewhamilton » Wed Jul 19, 2017 9:11 pm

In 2006 Jacqueline Florine http://jacquelineflorine.com/14ers was the first woman to attempt to climb all 15 of California's 14ers in a single push. Due to some bad luck with weather and timing with big-horn sheep mating she was unable to climb Mt. Williamson. Her time of 9 days 12 hours 17 minutes still stands for those 14 summits.

As far as I know, only one other woman has attempted to break this time, Maggie Crawford in 2012. http://maggiecrawford.wordpress.com

Climbing the 14ers in California is a lot different than climbing them in Colorado. Most of them have huge approaches, where you start your climb in 100 degree temperatures in the desert at something like 6000 feet. Many of them are technical. Two have summit blocks that require fairly advanced fifth class climbing (5.9 for Thunderbolt), and the rating system often throws Colorado climbers through a loop as anything rated class 4 in California will remind you of 5th class Colorado climbing.

On July 24th Andrea Sansone will begin an attempt to climb them all and set a new female speed record. The plan is to break the 13 Sierra 14ers into two tough multi-day legs, and climb White and Shasta individually, hoping to finish in 7 or 8 days.

If you are interested in following her progress here is a link to our satellite tracker: http://share.garmin.com/14ers

Andrea loves and respects the mountains and I am excited to be able to take part in this adventure with her. After considering the options we decided to do this together as a self-supported attempt.

Good luck Andrea!

I'm gonna go ahead and venture energy won't be an issue.

Good luck! Although I am sad to see that you will beat my personal record for climbing the CA 14ers. It took me 5 years. I am pretty sure you will beat that record by about...5 years! :-D

Hm, I think I went right where you went left at that 5th point on the right near the middle of pic 1.

Gonna be honest, I've never been at all excited about these things but I'm rootin hard for this! Good luck!

Best of luck Andrea & Andrew!

I'm going to say some things about style here because I know it will come up sooner or later. Since the intent is to set the women's FKT, and since Andrea is accompanied by another person, there are potential nuances. I believe that most climbers & mountaineers would expect that the person going for an FKT would lead any roped pitches, for example. For the Colo 14ers, the standard has been "no guiding" (which I personally don't agree with, but it is widely accepted). Will you follow this standard? You should be clear and open about these things. Of course, verification of things like who leads & who route-finds is basically impossible. Anyway, just some thoughts. If Andrea is successful, she will have the FKT for "women, accompanied".

In my haste, I didn't notice Andrew was going to be joining her. Wish it weren't so, but who the hell am I? Do you have a hazmat/spray screen for the sh*t you're probably going to get Peter?

Speaking of spray, y'all have any WD-40? The wheels are squeaking.
