Poll: Would the Iguana Rescue have been successful?

Post by LifeIsGood »

The iguana on Mt. Elbert photo turned out to be a hoax. But it got me wondering- had it been real, how would the rescue be done?

While quite noble in intent, the proposed rescue seemed to me like an extraordinarily challenging venture!

Discuss.

About like this. Except less dog shaped and more iguana shaped. I'm not sure if Tony could have matched the look of shame and embarrassment though.

If they were able to find the iguana, yeah probably with one of those carriers above ^

But I think finding an iguana somewhere on such a big mountain would be extremely difficult, since presumably he wouldn't respond quite as enthusiastically to people as a dog would. And he'd probably blend in with the rocks.

Uh... No... Maya left Jon for dead on the side of Flora when he was injured and got annoyed he wasn't keeping pace.

Well, I guess I’m still hoping ScottP will tell us some details of his game plan for the rescue.

It is fascinating to me that people can care so much about a lizard they’ve never even met. The abandoned dog on Bierstadt a few years back was heartbreaking (successful rescue), but this iguana wasn’t nearly as cute!

We used to have pet iguanas.

I was going to go up there and try and bring it down.

If it really was next to the trail as the hoaxers claimed, I was hoping I could find it.

Iguanas can't move at all when it's cold (they drop out of trees in Florida when it gets down to 45 degrees or so). Even at 60-65 degrees they can only move very slowly.

If you could find it (given the temperatures up there it shouldn't have been able to move far) and if it was cool outside (it was cool and rainy/Snowy during the hoax) it wouldn't be hard to catch at all. In fact it likely couldn't move at all. You would just be able to pick it up and bring it down. It couldn't run or hide in those temperatures, especially in the morning.

If it were exposed, an eagle or hawk would have likely found it first and as Scott points out, would have been easy pickens if it couldn't run away quickly

when crying wolf, definitely puts in jeopardy any future legitimate iguana rescue operations...
