I also finished on Wilson Peak. Definitely a bitter sweet moment though!

I finished on Conundrum on 7/21/14 twenty years to the day after my first hike up Sneffels. I chose Conundrum because it was the only relatively easy peak in my final dozen and I wanted to get the group of four who did the original hike 20 years before back together for the finisher. Also Conundrum’s controversial place on the list of 14ers was an added bonus. It was somewhat for naught though since my buddy and his wife had hiked zero 14ers after the first one and turned back at the top of the headwall on Castle. Hiking a mere 14er for my 1994 girlfriend now friend was not a problem since she morphed into a fine mountaineer and summited major peaks all over the world. I convinced her to wait so we could both finish on Conundrum to make it even more fun. The day was a cluster from the start with my buddy being his customary hour late then forgetting he sat his giant cup of coffee on the roof of my car, at least forgetting until it spilled all over the windshield, then taking a call on the way up that I begged him not to answer which turned out to be his attorney informing him of a lawsuit. Further delays continued as we stoped to allow him to sort that out delaying the start until 10 am. On top of Castle at 3 pm then on top of a windless warm Conundrum at 4. The descent was even more eventful as we glissaded off the saddle using only the handle end of a hiking pole nearly sliding into the bright blue lake. Then with the end of the road in sight the trail went next to a tarn and we both broke through into freezing waist deep water. All was for forgiven as everybody celebrated that evening with microbrews and pizza at Mezzaluna in Aspen and a promise to finish the Centennials together on a July 21st in the future.
