Alternative 58 Checklist?

Post by bmcqueen »

The recent discussions on getting burned out along with the fact that many of us (myself included) enjoy a good checklist to work on got me thinking about putting together an alternative checklist for mountain adventures. I'm at 42 of the 58 on this list. How about you? What else is missing that needs to be on the "unofficial list of 74"?

Class 1

1. Learn and carry in your pack the 10 Essentials
2. Bring a trash bag and leave a #cleaner14er
3. Loan needed gear to a stranger on the mountain
4. Take an avalanche safety class
5. Take a wilderness first aid or first responder course
6. Support your local SAR team
7. Volunteer for trail work with Colorado Fourteeners Initiative
8. Give $ to Colorado Fourteeners Initiative
9. Post a conditions report
10. Post a trailhead status update
11. Attend the spring gathering
12. Attend the fall gathering
13. Attend the winter welcomer
14. Attend a monthly 14ers.com happy hour
15. Adopt the Leave No Trace personal ethic
16. Buy someone a beverage after your climb
17. Give a friend a 14er-related gift (bronze summit marker, etc.)
18. Soak in a hot springs after a climb
19. Bring enough of a yummy snack to share on the summit
20. Summit with your significant other (could be Class 5 – it depends)
21. Summit with your Mom or Dad

Class 2

22. Set a challenging goal; train for it and do it. Repeat the process.
23. Make your own calendar using your 14er photos
24. Be on the summit for a sunrise
25. Night summit during a full moon
26. Do a headstand or yoga pose on the summit
27. Spring snow couloir climb
28. Dig a snow cave
29. Change a flat tire when you return to the trailhead
30. Write a trip report
31. Help someone with car trouble at the trailhead
32. Try the Beau Jo’s 14er Challenge after your climb
33. Soak your feet for two minutes in a mountain stream
34. Share a hot beverage with someone on a cold summit
35. Learn about the birds, wildlife and wildflowers in the alpine zone (know what the Krummholz is)
36. Help an out of shape person train for their first peak

Class 3

37. Calendar winter summit
38. Ski descent
39. Do a peak solo
40. Trail run a peak to set your personal record time
41. Take a rookie out on their first peak
42. Join someone for their 14er finisher
43. Learn to safely glissade with your ice axe and do it
44. Assist in a rescue (either on a SAR team or impromptu on the mountain)
45. Summit with your son or daughter
46. Be able to laugh about that one time when you really screwed up…..

Class 4

47. Spend a night in your snow cave
48. Be the one to call it and turn around when it’s not a safe summit day
49. Take someone on their first Class 3 or 4 peak
50. Do one of the four big 14er traverses
51. Summit a peak on New Year’s Day
52. Do all the routes on a peak
53. Seasonal grid on a peak
54. Climb the same peak twice in a day

Class 5

55. Climb one of the Class 5 routes on a peak
56. Monthly grid on a peak
57. Make someone’s day when they find out you are carrying a rope
58. Climb a peak just for you – no social media after!

I'm at 23 of the 58. About as many as the number of 14ers I've done :) Now I just need to teach Brad how to do a handstand so that he can check another one off!

Brad, you're a good person. Thank you for your contributions to this forum. (Regarding checklists: I used to think they were pointless but have to admit I really like your presentation here.)

Some cool ideas, Brad.

I love the idea of another checklist to follow! Thanks for sharing!

43/58 - what does it say that I'm closer to finishing this list than the actual 14er list?

#58 should be like the #1, or in other words, the First Rule. Because you know, this list needs rules too!

It can't be in the Class 1 category. Class 5 difficulty for sure!

Interesting list! I'm at 46. Though there are some that I will never complete as written (#45), unless you can count the spawn of someone else.

Yes - love this list!

However as a geologist I feel that the alpine geology should be recognized along with the alpine biology (birds, wildlife, wildflowers)...these mountains are made of rocks after all. For my own personal version I've added the following to #35, and submit for broader consideration:

Learn the geology of the 14ers...understand the rocks you're climbing.

I hear you. I will never get one of my parents up. They both like to hike, but class 1 low altitude. I've been up with hubby's dad, but I still didn't count it!

Yes! I need to do more of this as I'm in awe of the rocks each time we climb. I frequently stop to admire particular rock patterns and formations.
