Mt Columbia scree? Did I miss something???
I've heard lots about the scree on Columbia, and how it sucks to no end. Today on Bierstadt I listened to people talk about Columbia being the worst 14er in that you have to climb scree all the way to the ridge. Even when I did Columbia, people were talking about how bad it was. As I headed up, I thought the same, but felt I was going the wrong way just as many others have. I found the trail down low and made a quick summit. On the way down I followed the trail and had minimal scree to contend with. Is it me or is everyone going the wrong way, giving this mountain a bad reputation?

Maybe you benefited from the trail project that CFI started last year. I haven't been in that area recently but mostly remember a steep slope that was kind of annoying but with hiking poles didn't slide my way down.

When I did Columbia we only ascended, because we came down Harvard. We found a sustained trail the whole way, and it was no issue at all. I would not have been too concerned with descending it either. I'm thinking that many are dropping onto the slope to early and not using the trail which I'm sure would not be fun.

I was up there july of 2015, before the work. The picture I marked "bad part" seems to be it for scree. After that the hike was fine. I just didn't understand what all the fuss was about. Maybe I'm missing it, and everyone is talking about the traverse from Harvard.dpage wrote:Maybe you benefited from the trail project that CFI started last year.
