For years I have thought that the highest peak I have climbed was Chimborazo, a mere 6000er, but I was relieved to find out that I have climbed an 8000er years before.
According to All-Trails, the northeast summit of Y Mountain (next to Provo Utah) is 28,112 feet, which at 8568 meters is solidly in the 8000er category. I'm surprised that the sources on 8000 meter peaks somehow missed this one. Hopefully they will update their websites soon.
For those looking to do their first 8000er, I'd highly recommend the northeast summit of Y Mountain. It's a solid day hike from the trailhead in Provo, but there are no crevasses or snow in summer and early fall to deal with. In this regard, it's probably safer than K2 or Annapurna, thus my recommendation that it is a good first 8000er.
Since it is well below timberline, thinderstorms aren't much of a problem either. For some unknown reason the timberline on the mountain is extraordinary high.
I'd give this mountain 5 stars as far as a first 8000er.

Re: My first 8000+ meter peak
Oh Scott - I saw the Thread Title and thought I was about to have some entertainment for the day....but I did get a quick laugh!
I doubt I will ever get over 8,000m (closest I have been is 7,700m).
The recent pictures from Manaslu and K2 look every bit as bad as Everest...oh well....there are so many mountains in the world

Re: My first 8000+ meter peak
Congratulations on the success. There are many questions that us, mere mortals, may have :
Was it Sherpa assisted?
How many oxygen bottles did you bring back from the mountain?
Did you get any frostbite/ snow blindness?
Did you get into any fight with any famous fellow climber, like yourself, who subsequently abandoned his attempt for the ascent?
Do you now belong to the "special Everest club" (like Viesturs, Breashears...) ?

The mountain is only 8,572 ft. The additional 19,540 feet of elevation is Mormon self-righteousness from the BYU student body.
Just kidding, LDS climbers!

20,000’ of vertical relief sounds a bit steep for my tastes. Can’t wait to see Honnold free solo it though.
