Yep. I climbed the Buffalo Peaks on August 26, 2016 following a rather vile (cold with steady rain) evening and night at Fourmile TH. On top I found a few inches of fresh snow. Sherman and its neighbors looked decidedly wintery.

This time of year, late August, you might see early snow dustings. Those weather fronts tend to come from the northwest and go into the 30s or 20s at night.
The storms this week Aug 15 are warmer monsoons from the south. But as they say in Game of Thrones "winter is coming". Bill M will be happy because he is a mountain snow person.

How are precipitation totals in CO stacking up against previous years? It does seem to be a wetter summer than what I remember

It's been really hit and miss. Where I live (GJ), we're only at 38% of normal precip this month (of course this is a desert).
Some places have been getting pounded and some are stayed very dry (even in the mountains).
No matter where in Colorado you are though, I swear that the weekend forecasts have been worse than the weekday forecasts most of the time!

With the forescasts more locked in I think I am coming to terms with abandoning an attempt on the bells traverse. Had two weekend passes for parking and both got rained out. Bummer, I guess I will try again next year. Will be much more bummed if weather is bad over labor day weekend in the San Juans.
