Hawkeye Point for Talus

Postby Skip Perkins » Fri Jun 22, 2007 12:28 pm

After braving the elements of Timm's Hill in Wisconsin I decided to try a less strenuous hike and so with my 83 year old mother as a belay slave, headed to Sibley, IA, for a stab at Hawkeye Point.

The trailhead is listed as 1/8 of a mile from the summit but I believe this is an exageration. You can drive all the way to the summit in just about anything you want. (wheel barrow, roller skates, Outback) The registry is cool. It has the usual sign-in book but also has key chains and a baseball cap that is sold on the honor system.

The rest of the summit includes a silo, cattle feeding apparatus, many licence plates from other states, and a bench. It was a pleasant journey that was followed by a great Sibley lunch.

It will be difficult to change my mindset after the grueling High Points for Talus jihad, to head up Lil Bear next week. Wish me luck!!![/img]

Right on Skip! I am concerned though, that lady did not look like she was roped up or anything? Did she free climb that whole thing? Amazing!!

On the silo and I am truely impressed!

I'm a native Iowan (Iowa Falls then UNI) and never quite braved the trip up Hawkeye. Somehow I have Elbert and Hood for state highpoints but not Hawkeye. Congrats!

Way to go Granny! As a native Iowan who is dumb enough to still live in Iowa, Hawkeye Point is on my list. I have climbed eleven 14er's but still haven't worked up the nerve to try this dangerous and challenging climb. By the way, as a UNI grad who is tired of hearing Hawkeye this, Hawkeye that, I feel it should be named Panther Peak.

I am a originally from Iowa as well. I knew there was such a point but I had thought it was in the middle of a hog feed lot.

I haven't climbed enough 14ers yet to feel comfortable about hiking up Iowa's highest point.

Cool!

I know Iowa just a little bit. I know it for the rolling hills as you cross, but the high point is on the other side. I guess that is the general western rise as you head towards the high plains. I'm surprised to see that it is relatively flat at the high point though. What is the elevation?
