Adirondacks?

Postby nyker » Mon Mar 24, 2014 10:07 pm

Anyone planning to be up there this coming weekend? I am contemplating to try a few peaks, subject to conditions...

Looks like some thick snow pack still up there, 40+" at Lake Colden with a 6-7 feet base in the high elevations:

Snowshoes seem pretty necessary as well as traction to deal with the ice higher up underlying the steep areas where snow will be blown off.

If you want hike some great mountains off the beaten path I recommend the Seward Range.

Lake Colden is a popular spot right in the middle of it all. If you head that way, try to get to Skylight, my favorite of the 46.

Good luck and post pics when you're done!

I've been tentatively thinking of the Colden east slide in the next couple of weekends, maybe ski down. You should have excellent conditions, the last two storms really piled up the snow, I doubt you find too much ice...unless you end up on the Giant ridge trail, that trail ices up like a mother this time of year.

Yea, I got snowed/iced out this weekend (more of a travel issue with a car than climbing), so will push this until next weekend.
TCUTED - yes, I did Giant last year (same weekend actually), and I was happy to have my crampons on most of the route. Ice many feet thick for hundreds of feet at a time. Crazy.

I'd potentially be interested in tagging along this weekend if you are planning on Saturday, and want company, send me a PM if you are interested.

Man, I just realized how old I am. We stayed at John's Brook Lodge in the 80's but can't remember what mountain we climbed.
