Car camping suggestions near RMNP

Postby OmahaAdam » Fri Jul 19, 2013 11:02 pm

Fortunate enough to squeeze in one last trip before the school year begins again, but instead of hitting the backcountry like usual we are bringing a couple of camping newbies with us. Looking to do some car camping within maybe 20min of RMNP and found Olive Ridge (south of Estes Park on Hwy 7) and Green Ridge Campground (near Grand Lake) and would appreciate any reviews of either or better recommendations if you have any. As much as I'd like to hike in somewhere this isn't the group for that.

Elk Meadows Lodge and RV Resort

1 mile from RMNP gates. 2 miles from downtown Estes Park. Tent camping along west side of the park. Nice showers.

A few pics halfway down the link page.

We spent a night at Olive Ridge last September. Post-Labor Day and during the week, it was almost empty. Very basic, but it's a short drive to the Longs Peak trailhead.

Not sure which days you are looking to go, and it is fairly likely the reservable spaces are already booked up, but don't overlook the two open campgrounds inside the park - Aspen Glen and Moraine Park. Both have nice sites; we prefer Aspen Glen since it is much smaller and has therefore has less traffic. Timber Ridge (Timber Creek?) on the west side is also open but with the recent pine-beetle thinning, is not as nice as it used to be.

Thanks for the responses so far! Jim, Olive looked pretty basic online but we don't need much. We'll be there during the week so empty is just fine - the more time we spend at camp means we're not doing something right. Thanks for the pics and preview, mtnview.

Alpine, we're going to be there in 10 days - kind of thrown together last minute. Staying in RMNP was definitely our first choice but all the reservable sites are full. :(

Meeker Park has a forest service campground just off hwy 7 - a bit more convenient to the park. Very simple but a good number of sites, and also about half the price of the other campgrounds. No reservations for this one and it's easy to miss driving by as the signage leads you to believe it's a picnic area, which is across the road. Just look for the National Forest sign a couple miles south of Longs. It's also rather close to the road so you'll be hearing vehicles passing by a lot.

Thanks, cougar. Half price and forest service put this on the short list. Great suggestion!

Estes Park Campground at East Portal has been a great spot for us over the years. Easy access to town and you can walk right into the park.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We had a great week (how could you not) and were lucky enough to find vacancies over at Timber Creek. Also a first seeing NPS arrest someone. Good times, noodle salad.
