What kind of question is that?

I'd be up for Cathedral. sans skis.

Cathedral would be my first choice, possibly with skis. I do need to confirm dates and Mother's Day means I have to be back on Sunday, but still worth going. Will confirm.

Maybe its just me, but i think backpacking into Conundrum Hot Springs and spending Saturday night at the springs, and climbing castle/conundrum from the west on Sunday sounds like fun day to me. Then road gates wouldn't be an issue :-)

Where's our resident hot-springs expert? Susan? You around?

Anyone know how busy Conundrum Hot Springs might be in May? Would we have the place to ourselves?

Here's what I wrote in my book:

Access: Winter snow and avalanche danger on the trail from about mid-Oct - and heavy spring runoff from melting snow through about mid-July - can make the trail and creek crossings treacherous.

The hot springs generally get busy starting in late June, and a mid-week trip would obviously increase your chances of solitude. There are good bridges up until about 6 1/2 miles, where you'll hit the major crossing of Conundrum Creek, which is not bridged. If it's running high and hard it can pull you under, so take proper precautions. I brought water shoes for this crossing, tied my boots to myself, and loosened my pack so I could ditch it if I had to.

More details here: Touring Colorado Hot Springs on Google Books

This is a wilderness area, so follow proper protocol: Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Area

Call the ranger district at (970) 925-3445 for current conditions, and to see if free "waste bags" are available at the trailhead or at the station, and read the section of my book about where to filter water - and more importantly - where *not* to :-)

Have fun!

I'm in! I'd love to carpool with someone and any route up either peak is fine by me. I'd just like to get out

I hate it but I am not going to make this one. I have to go out of town Thurs-Sat and then with Mother's Day on Sunday it won't work.

A couple questions:
1. What TH or area will the Saturday night campfire be at? The Castle Creek TH?
2. Does anyone have suggestions for "easier" peaks in the area? I have an ax and microspikes but lack crampons. I saw a suggestion for Malamute and Leahy Peaks, any other ideas?

Thank You

EDIT: Found the answer to my first question. #-o

You might take a look at "Electric Pass Peak", which has a trail most of the way up.

At this stage in the game I'm aiming for Castle/Conundrum via standard route on saturday if anyone wants to join in.
