Culebra over Memorial Day week/weekend?

Postby nyker » Sat Mar 02, 2013 11:19 am

Hi all, is anyone looking to set up a climb of Culebra around this timeframe? If so, I'd be interested in joining! I am not very familiar with the logistics of doing so though.
I'll likely be in town the weekend of and the week after Memorial Day (5-25 - 6/1).

You will need to contact the ranch. I don't know when they start up their normal summer climbing schedule.

Based on Trip Reports and other rumors, it appears they don't open for the regular season until the last week in June or first week in July. That said, I was looking at climbing Culbra as a "warm up" 14er this summer. Sooo... If anyone knows "when the doors open", I'm in!

Hmm thanks guys.

Matt, that cross country route looks interesting...
Is this a legit route, i.e. a *legal* route? I imagine best done in Spring or Fall outside of the monsoon season...
If you can supply the 4x4, I'd be up for it! I have enough trouble getting to the normal "rough 2wd" trailheads marked on maps.
Perhaps as an overnighter, camping someplace might make it more doable if any hitches come up.

This trip report mentions finding a register "placed by the Republic of Texas Mountaineers some years ago" on Mt. Maxwell (13,335'). I left that register on 8/6/98, along with registers on Cuatro Peak (13,487') and Mariquita Peak (13,405') the same day. I'm glad to see at least one of the RTM registers is still in active service (at least as of 2005). :)
