January solo attempt of Denali

Postby macgyver » Thu Jan 10, 2013 11:21 am

No, not me, someone else unfortunately.

Ran across this a couple weeks ago, thoght it was pretty cool - Lonnie Dupre is attempting to become the first to solo Denali in January:

My apologies if this topic has been posted on here already, I searched and didn't come across anything obvious

Interesting sled setup, Steve G will be jealous. I suppose those long poles will keep him from falling into an icy hell. Fur collars are also back in fashion. They do have advantages over balaclavas in cold winds, so I've been told.

I was talking to Lonnie last August at the OR show in Salt Lake City when he came by the FalconGuides booth to have them distribute his book. He said he was going to try the winter ascent again since he failed last year. He loves it cold. Lonnie said the hardest part of doing Denali in winter is being hunkered down in a covered trench for a week at a time while a storm rages. He said he sews and repairs all his gear and reads but it gets really boring. What a bad-ass! I hope he makes it this time...

Thanks for posting. I'll be following this one for sure. The audio updates on the blog he has are pretty cool as well. Looking forward to a safe summit.
